CLINTON, N.Y. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team battled tough but came up just short, as the Camels fell to host Hamilton 1-0 on Saturday afternoon from Russell Sage Rink.
It was a tight checking start as the teams combined for just five shots in the opening 10 minutes. For Conn, Jess Pistorino (Charlestown, Mass.) and Christine Oar (Scituate, Mass.) were denied, while Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) made three saves in the Camels' goal. The squads traded chances for the rest of the period, but neither came particularly close to scoring as the game remained scoreless after one.
Hamilton started quickly in the middle frame and opened the scoring at 2:20 as Jamie Porter redirected a pass into the goal to make it 1-0. With just over seven minutes left in the period, Conn earned a power play and peppered Evie Sheridan with four shots during the woman-advantage, but the Camels were unable to convert, heading to the third period, trailing 1-0.
Conn had a chance to even the score early in the third, earning another power play, just 30 seconds in. However, just as the power play expired, Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) came down the slot and fired a shot off the crossbar, keeping the score at 1-0. The Camels continued to push looking to tie the game, and pulled Galizio for the extra skater with a minute and a half remaining. However, Conn was unable to break through, falling 1-0.
Hamilton outshot Conn 24-14, while Conn held a 21-17 edge on face-off wins.
Galizio was solid in net, finishing with 23 saves. Four Camels recorded two shots, paced by Sydney Frank (Stillwater, N.Y.), Pistorino, Sofia Polizzi (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Lily Stern (Nove Zamky, Slovakia). Stern added a game-high five blocks, while Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) won nine face-offs, as Conn went 0-2 on the power play and did not take any penalties.
Sheridan got the win in net, stopping all 14 shots. Porter tallied the lone goal, while Sophie Berghammer and Cuora Sullivan both added an assist as Hamilton went 2-2 on the penalty kill and did not earn any power plays.
Conn (6-8-2, 2-7-1 NESCAC) returns to action on Friday night as the Camels travel to Middletown, Conn. to take on Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m.
