WBB Drops NESCAC Opener vs. Colby

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team opened NESCAC play with a 64-43 setback against Colby College on Friday night at Luce Field House.

The Camels struggled to get going offensively, shooting 30 percent for the game while going 2-for-22 from long range. Sofia Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) led the way with 18 points and two assists while Sydney Marshall (Enfield, Conn.) added 10 points, five rebounds and three blocks.

Lydia Mordarski paced Colby (8-4 overall, 1-0 NESCAC) with a game-high 21 points and shot 5-for-7 from three-point range. Kate Olenik chipped in 12 points and five rebounds while Amelia Hanscom corralled 13 boards as the Mules enjoyed a 52-28 advantage on the glass.

Colby pulled ahead with a 10-0 run in the opening quarter and never trailed again. Olenik supplied four points during the spurt and eight in the period as the Mules took an 18-9 lead into the second quarter.

A three by Emily Ryan put the visitors on top by double digits early in the second. Mordarski later caught fire from three and supplied Colby's final nine points of the half, all from beyond the arc. The Mules settled into the break with a 32-19 lead as Mordarski led all scorers with 11 points.

Tavarez had the hot hand for the Camels in the second half, racking up 14 points on a variety of drives and spin moves in the paint. At one juncture she accounted for 10 straight points for Conn, cutting the deficit to 46-35 with 6:31 to go in the fourth. However, Mordarski nearly matched her offensive production on the other end, and the Mules never let their margin dip below double digits.

Conn (8-5 overall, 0-1 NESCAC) will next host No. 10 Bowdoin College on Saturday, January 10 at 3:00 p.m.
