NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision to No. 21 Bates College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC showdown at Silfen Field.
The Bobcats scored a goal in each half and defended well all game, improving to 7-3 overall and 3-3 in league action. Haley Dwight netted the game winner less than a minute into the second quarter while Elsa Copeland added an insurance marker midway through the third.
Conn held an 11-9 edge in penalty corners but couldn't take advantage. Bates goalie Ava Donohue made six saves to secure the shutout.
The Camels produced a pair of quality scoring chances in the fourth quarter but came up empty. Conn was awarded a penalty stroke three minutes into the period, but
Maddie Mason's (Brentwood, N.H.) attempt was denied by a diving stop from Donohue. Minutes later, Donohue made another great play to clear the ball away before
Sadie Gearan (Lynnfield, Mass.) could attempt a shot on a breakaway.
Conn goalie
Isabella Carnall (Malvern, Pa.) finished with four saves in the loss.
Conn (3-7 overall, 1-7 NESCAC) will next play at Montclair State University on Wednesday, October 14 at 6:00 p.m.
