MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Connecticut College field hockey team picked up a 3-0 victory over Montclair State University on Wednesday night in a non-conference showdown at Rick Giancola-Sprague Field.
In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, it was New Jersey native
Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) who paced the Camels with a pair of goals in her homecoming.
Alexa Blaeser (Boxford, Mass.) also finished with a goal and an assist in the contest, and goalies
Katie Dickson (Ridgefield, Conn.) and
Isabella Carnall (Malvern, Pa.) made one save apiece to combine for the shutout.
Bonner's first goal came just 7:57 into the game on an individual effort that began outside the scoring area. She first dribbled past a defender and into the circle, and then unleashed a flick from 11 yards out that beat the goalie to the stick side.
Blaeser added to Conn's lead with 2:09 left in the first half, finishing off a play that began on the sideline from 40 yards out.
Isabelle Steiner (Newfields, N.H.) took the restart and played the ball into the midfield for
Megan Pons (Charlotte, N.C.), who swiftly redirected it to the front of the cage. Blaser got to the ball first, chipped it over the charging goalie, and finished into the open net for her third tally of the season.
The Camels led 2-0 at the break and added the final marker in the fourth quarter when Blaeser found Bonner in front of the cage. Bonner quickly spun to her left and fired past the goalie for her third goal of the season and second multi-goal game of her career.
Dickson, who got the starting nod, made one save in her collegiate debut and saw 45 minutes of action. Carnall played the final 15 minutes and preserved the shutout with one save.
Conn (4-7 overall) will next play at Dean College on Monday, October 19 at 3:30 p.m.
