Field Hockey Holds Off JWU 3-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Connecticut College field hockey team picked up its third straight win courtesy of a 3-2 victory over Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday evening in non-conference play at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletic Complex.

After falling behind 1-0 in the opening quarter, the Camels responded with goals in each of the next three periods to go up 3-1. A late score by the Wildcats made it a one-goal game for the final 3:31, but Conn held on to finish 5-0 in non-conference action for the second year in a row.

Serena Moore (Houston, Texas) continued her offensive tear with two goals against the Wildcats, giving her four over the past two games. Meredith du Four (Beverly, Mass.) also recorded her first goal of the season, and goalies Katie Dickson (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Isabella Carnall (Malvern, Pa.) combined for 12 saves.

Johnson & Wales scored off a penalty corner with 1:22 remaining in the first quarter to grab a 1-0 advantage. The Camels returned the favor 5:30 into the second period on a penalty corner of their own. After inserting the ball, Moore set up shop at the near post and watched the play develop. A shot by Eloise Montagano (Bedford, N.H.) was denied by the JWU goalie, but Moore quickly cleaned up the rebound to tie the score at 1-1.

Conn took the lead midway through the third quarter on Moore's team-leading fifth goal of the season. After a failed clear attempt by a defender, Moore picked up a loose ball at the top of the scoring area and ripped a blast through traffic to put the Camels on top 2-1.

Conn gave itself a cushion in the fourth by cashing in on another penalty corner. This time it was du Four who inserted and waited at the near post, finishing off a pass across the goal mouth from Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.). The tally put the Camels on top 3-1 with 9:00 left on the clock.

The Wildcats cut the deficit to one with 3:31 to go, scoring off a rebound on a save made by Dickson. Just over a minute later, JWU nearly pocketed the game-tying goal but was denied by Dickson's seventh and final save of the night. She made the initial stop with her right leg pad, and then cleared the ball off the goal line with her stick to prevent another rebound chance.

Conn (6-7 overall) will next host Bowdoin College on Saturday, October 24 at 11:00 a.m.
