NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 6 Bowdoin College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC battle at Silfen Field.
The Camels scored in the opening minute of the contest and carried the 1-0 advantage into the second half. The Polar Bears responded with a pair of goals in the third quarter to pull in front for good, improving to 12-2 overall (7-2 NESCAC) on the season.
Conn earned a penalty corner 29 seconds into the game and promptly cashed in for the early score. After the ball was inserted to the top of the circle,
Eloise Montagano (Bedford, N.H.) unleashed a shot on goal that was redirected by
Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) into the back of the cage. The tally was her team-leading fifth of the season, and just the second goal allowed by Bowdoin over its last eight games.
Conn goalie
Katie Dickson (Ridgefield, Conn.) made two saves in the first half to protect the margin. After the halftime intermission, Bowdoin scored twice in a 1:50 span to shift the momentum. Maddie Mrva scored off her own rebound to even the match in the 36th minute, and Charlotte Crawford potted the go-ahead goal from a tough angle in the 38th.
The Camels pushed for the game-tying goal in the fourth quarter but couldn't put a shot on frame. Bowdoin finished with a 14-7 edge in total shots and a 9-5 edge in penalty corners.
Prior to the game the Camels honored seniors
Frances Brisbane (Cohasset, Mass.),
Sadie Gearan (Lynnfield, Mass.),
Maddie Mason (Brentwood, N.H.),
Megan Pons (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Kellyn Scheel (Palo Alto, Calif.) in a special ceremony.
Conn (6-8 overall) will close out the regular season at home against Wesleyan University on Tuesday, October 27 at 4:00 p.m.
