Men's Hockey Scores Four in the Third to Defeat Amherst 7-4

NEW LONDON, Conn.  – The Connecticut College men's hockey team scored four goals in the third period to break a 3-3 tie to come away with a 7-4 win over Amherst on Friday night from Dayton Arena.

The teams traded chances early, but it was Amherst that opened the scoring at the midway point of the period. Magnus Gadowsky took a pass from Vincent Velocci to make it 1-0 at 9:57.

Just over four minutes later, Quinn Kennedy (Silver Spring, Md.) took a shot from the point that Michael Stenberg (Needham, Mass.) tipped. The initial shot was stopped, but Stenberg followed up, by poking the rebound home to make it 1-1 after one.

Just 16 seconds into the middle frame the Camels took their first lead of the game. Arty Mirante (Garden City, N.Y.) fed a pass to the point that Kareem Alazem (McLean, Va.) fired towards goal that took a bounce of Vincent Lamberti and in to make it 2-1. The Mammoths answered a minute and a half later as Andrew Carmody converted on the power play.

The offense kept flowing as Conn jumped back in front on the power play at 7:59. Reece Cordray (Verona, Wis.) and Pete Stanger (Bathurst, New Brunswick) played catch at the point before finding Ryan McKenna (Garden City, N.Y.) who fired a one-timer home to make it 3-2. Amherst again answered as Oliver Flynn tapped home a rebound on the power play to send the game to the third period tied at three.

The teams traded opportunities for the first half of the period, but both goalies kept the game as is. However, with just over seven minutes remaining, Conn took the lead for good. Rocco Testa-Basi (Ottawa, Ontario) found a streaking Cole Watson (London, Ontario) who fired over the blocker of Lamberti to make it 4-3.

Just under four minutes later, Kennedy struck the crossbar with a shot, but Matt Lewis (Pembrok, Mass.) tucked home the rebound to make it 5-3. Amherst got a goal back from Ben Ritter, with Lamberti on the bench for the extra attacker, but Cordray and Jon Barker (North Kingstown, R.I.) potted empty net goals to give the Camels the 7-4 win.

Amherst outshot Conn 34-31, while Conn held a 42-37 edge on face-off wins.

Kellen Beauton (Colchester, Conn.) picked up the win in goal, finishing with 30 saves. Cordray recorded a goal and an assist, while both Kennedy and Mirante added two assists. Six other Camels chipped in one goal, while three others notched one assist. Mirante led the way with 16 face-off wins, as Conn went 1-5 on the power play and 3-5 on the penalty kill.

Lamberti got the start in goal, recording 24 saves. Velocci led Amherst with three points, as Amherst went 4-5 on the penalty kill and 2-5 on the power play.

Conn (9-11-1, 5-9-1 NESCAC) wraps up the home portion of their schedule tomorrow as the Camels host #2 Hamilton at 3:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena for senior day.
