BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team earned a crucial point, but ultimately fell 2-1 to Bowdoin in overtime Saturday afternoon from Watson Arena.
It was a slow start for both teams, as neither side was able to generate much in the opening 10 minutes. However, at 10:22 Bowdoin opened the scoring thanks to a marker from Meghan Britt. The Polar Bears earned a late power play in the period, but Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) and the Camels defense held strong, as Conn trailed 1-0 after the first.
Conn opened the middle frame with an early power play, but the Camels were unable to convert. Conn continued to push looking for the equalizer, and eventually did at 15:59. Emma Peterson (Westwood, Mass.) and Sofia Polizzi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) connected to find Charlotte Harris (Ystrad Mynach, Wales) to make it 1-1 heading to the third period.
Bowdoin opened the final period with two power plays, but again the Camels shut the door. Both teams continued to look for the winner in regulation, but Galizio and Abby Matusovich held strong to send the game to overtime.
Conn won the opening face-off of the extra session, as Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.) fired a shot wide. A minute and a half in, Galizio came up with a save on Emma Merrill, but Elena Digmagno scored at 2:16 to give the Polar Bears the extra point.
Bowdoin outshot Conn 24-17, while Conn held a 31-20 advantage on face-off wins.
Galizio got the start in goal, finishing with 22 saves. Harris tallied the lone goal for Conn, while Peterson and Polizzi both chipped in one assist. Serena Seiple led the way with 13 face-off wins, as Conn went 3-3 on the penalty kill and 1-3 on the power play.
Matusovich picked up the win, recording 16 saves. Britt and Dimagno led the Polar Bears with a goal each, as Bowdoin finished 0-3 on the power play and 2-3 on the penalty kill.
Conn (7-13-2, 3-12-1 NESCAC) returns home for the final two games of the regular season, as the Camels host Johnson and Wales at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday night in Dayton Arena.
