NEW LONDON, Conn. – Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) stopped all 28 shots as the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team defeated #8 Williams 3-0 on Friday night from Dayton Arena.
Conn started quickly, opening the scoring just 51 seconds into the contest. Sofia Donnelly (Ringwood, N.J.) threw a puck towards the goal that both Christine Oar (Scituate, Mass.) and Olivia Montembeault (Glencoe, Ill.) tipped towards the goal. Montembeault picked up the rebound and found Emma Peterson (Westwood, Mass.) who fired home to make it 1-0. The Camels had a good chance to double the advantage at 14:21, as Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.) got a short-handed breakaway, but she was stopped by Erin Pye, as Conn led 1-0 after one.
The Camels opened the middle frame with another early tally. Peterson picked up a puck in the neutral zone, firing a pass to Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.), before finding a streaking Engle down the slot who fired home to make it 2-0. Williams responded with five of the next six shots, but Galizio was sharp as Conn headed to the third in front 2-0.
The Ephs upped the pressure looking to get on the board, but Galizio and the Camels defense held strong. Williams had a great chance to cut the deficit in half, earning a power play with 3:43 to play, allowing the Ephs to pull the goalie and play 6-on-4. However, Conn was able to kill off the penalty, and just after it expired Engle potted a puck in the empty net to give the Camels the 3-0 win.
Both teams recorded 28 shots, while Williams held a 24-13 advantage on face-off wins.
Galizio was fantastic in goal, stopping all 28 shots for her first shutout of the season. Engle led the way with two goals, while Peterson chipped in a goal and an assist, with Chesner, Montembeault, and Oar each adding an assist. Oar and Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) led the way with five face-off wins, as Conn finished 2-2 on the penalty kill and 0-1 on the power play.
Pye got the start in net, finishing with 25 saves, as Williams went 0-2 on the power play and 1-1 on the penalty kill.
Conn (7-10-2, 3-9-1 NESCAC) wraps up the weekend series with Williams tomorrow afternoon, with puck drop set for 3:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
