NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team suffered a 65-38 setback against Amherst College on Saturday afternoon in NESCAC action at Luce Field House.
The Mammoths cruised on the backs of their two bigs, who each recorded a double-double in the win. Brielle Renwick posted game highs of 21 points and 13 rebounds while adding three steals and a pair of assists and blocks, and Chase Anderson finished with a line of 15 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks, three assists and two steals.
Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) paced the Camels with 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting and also pulled down three boards.
Avery Burns (Orleans, Mass.) chipped in nine points and shot 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.
Conn got out of the gates slowly and never recovered. Both teams struggled early, but the Mammoths came alive in the final minutes of the first to lead 11-5 after one. Amherst then took control by outscoring the Camels by a 24-8 margin in the second period, as Anderson and Renwick combined for 19 points in the stanza.
The Mammoths led 35-13 at the break after forcing 12 turnovers and limiting Conn to 4-for-20 shooting. Renwick had 15 points in the half while Anderson contributed 13.
The Camels bounced back in the third quarter as Xerras provided the fuel with three triples. Still, the Mammoths took a 47-29 advantage into the final period, and Renwick tacked on her final six points of the contest to bring Amherst home.
Prior to the game the Camels honored their five seniors—Burns,
Catherine Cole (Lebanon, N.H.),
Sydney Feeney (North Attleboro, Mass.),
Charlotte Head (Holden, Mass.) and
Hallie O'Toole (Wilbraham, Mass.)—in a special ceremony. All five got the starting nod and played significant minutes. Cole and O'Toole each provided buckets while Head grabbed two rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
Conn (13-9 overall, 4-5 NESCAC) will play at Bridgewater State University on Monday, February 9 at 5:30 p.m.
