ORLANDO, Fla. — The Connecticut College women's tennis team opened its spring trip with a pair of setbacks on Wednesday at the USTA National Campus, falling by 4-3 finals against both Ohio Northern University and East Texas Baptist University.
In the morning match, ONU swept all three doubles contests to grab the early advantage, but Conn struck back with wins at three of the top four singles spots.
Maya Kowalska (Feasterville-Trevose, Pa.) and
Asahi Goods (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) each won in straight sets at No. 1 and 4, respectively, while
Mary Ella Prendergast (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) split sets at No. 2 before winning a tiebreak.
The Camels also came up just short against ETBU later in the day. Despite a victory by Goods and
Marylove Reynolds (Little Rock, Ark.) at No. 2 doubles, Conn entered the singles portion trailing 1-0. Straight-set wins by Goods at No. 2 and
Teagan Skulley (Middleton, Mass.) at No. 6 helped stoke the rally, and
Nicolette Baksay (Colonia, N.J.) bounced back from a first-set loss to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3.
Conn couldn't secure a fourth point despite strong efforts by both Kowalska and
Sana Bhat (New Delhi), who each lost in competitive three-set matches. Kowalska took the first set off Monique Ybarra at No. 1 but fell by 7-6 tallies in sets two and three. Playing at No. 5, Bhat also lost her first and third sets by 7-6 finals against Jazmyne Ford-Schartner.
Conn (2-5 overall) will next face Midland University on Friday, March 13 at 11:00 a.m.
