No. 11 Colby Sinks Women's Lacrosse on Saturday

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team traveled north, falling to No. 11 Colby 14-4 on Saturday afternoon from Bill Alfond Field.

Colby started quickly, striking twice in the opening 2:42, to jump out to an early 2-0 lead. Conn grew into the contest, and cut the deficit in half with 7:07 left. 

Sophia Virgilio (Brightwaters, N.Y.) connected on a pass to Campbell Johnston (Duxbury, Mass.) who fired home on a woman-up opportunity to make it 2-1. The Mules answered just over a minute later on a tally from Corinne Kapalka to lead 3-1 after the first.

The Camels used a strong start to the second quarter to cut the advantage back to one, as Kate Coughlin (Reading, Mass.) found the back of the net at 11:03. Ainsley Burke pushed the lead to 4-2 at 6:25, before Colby scored three free-position goals in the final 4:35 to lead 7-2 at the break.

The Mules took control in the third quarter, outscoring Conn 6-0 in the frame to take a 13-2 advantage into the final quarter.

The Camels ended the run at 10:30, as Johnston found a streaking Victoria Evans (Sudbury, Mass.) for a goal to make it 13-3. Emma Greene answered with a free-position goal at 7:59, before Johnston beat the buzzer with her second woman-up goal, as Conn fell 14-4.

Colby outshot Conn 18-11, holding a 15-4 advantage on draw controls.

Ava Virga (Watertown, N.Y.) got the start in goal, finishing with two saves. Johnston paced the Camels attack with three points on two goals and one assist, with Coughlin and Evans both adding one goal, and Virgilio chipping in an assist.

Defensively, Conn scooped up 11 ground balls, led by a team-high three from Emma McDonnell (Stevenson, Md.) and two from Kate Sullivan (Westwood, Mass.). Four Camels tallied one draw control each, while five forced one turnover a piece.

Brynna Hall got the win in the cage, recording four saves. Four Mules led the way with three points each, while five others tallied at least one point.

Conn (2-5, 0-4 NESCAC) wraps up their short two-game road trip, as the Camels travel to Hartford, Conn. to take on Trinity on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.
