NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team fell to #1 Middlebury 15-1 on Saturday from Silfen Field.
Middlebury opened the scoring three minutes into the game as Haley Hamilton made it 1-0. The teams traded possessions over the next five minutes, before Maeve Lee notched a free-position goal to make it 2-0. The Panthers added two more goals in the period, to lead 4-0 after one.
Middlebury continued their run into the second quarter, outscoring Conn 6-0 to lead 10-0 at the break.
Both defenses picked up the pace in the third quarter, as the teams combined for just three goals. The Panthers got the first goal of the second half, as Caroline Adams made it 11-0 at 11:10.
Conn finally got on the board at 8:43, as Elizabeth Gill (Hingham, Mass.) connected with Caroline Villarin (Duxbury, Mass.) who fired home to make it 11-1. Middlebury ended the game scoring the final four goals to come away with the 15-1 win.
Middlebury outshot Conn 24-5, while holding a 17-2 advantage on draw controls.
Ava Virga (Watertown, N.Y.) got the start in the cage, recording five saves. Villarin tallied the lone Conn goal, while Gill chipped in the assist, as Kate Coughlin (Reading, Mass.) had a team-high two shots.
Conn scooped up 17 ground balls, led by four from Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.), while both Kate Sullivan (Westwood, Mass.) and Chesner each forced two turnovers.
Elizabeth Savage got the start in goal, making two saves in the first half, before Annie Spring finished the game making one save. Skylar Lach led the way with five points, while Adams and Hamilton added four points.
Conn returns to action on Sunday, March 15 in Panama City Beach, Fla. against Hamilton at 8:00 p.m. EDT.
