Women's Lacrosse Stumbles at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Connecticut College women's lacrosse team hit the road for the final time, falling to Bowdoin 13-9 on Saturday afternoon from Ryan Field.

Bowdoin started quickly, opening the scoring just 57 seconds in, as Ellie Fabbro connected with Annie Bermingham. The next minutes were a defensive battle, before the Polar Bears scored three goals in the final seven minutes of the quarter to take a 4-0 lead after one.

Bowdoini continued their run to open the second quarter, scoring twice in 2:31 to push the lead to 6-0. Conn finally got on the board at 10:34 as Ava Gershon (Cranston, R.I.) converted on a free-position shot at 10:34.

The Polar Bears answered back with a goal from Grace Harvery, before the Camels ended the half with two straight tallies. Campbell Johnston (Duxbury, Mass.) tallied her 100th career goal at 3:42, before Victoria Evans (Sudbury, Mass.) finished off a pass from Elizabeth Gill (Hingham, Mass.) at 1:10 to cut the deficit to 7-3 at the half.

Bowdoin struck early again in the third quarter off a goal from Tate Ryan, but Kate Coughlin (Reading, Mass.) fired home a free-position goal at 11:53 to make it 8-4. The Polar Bears again pushed the lead back to five, before Johnston set-up Coughlin for her second goal of the quarter at 8:15. Bowdoin added one more goal in the frame to take a 10-5 advantage into the fourth.

The Polar Bears scored twice early in the final frame to push the lead to 12-5, before Coughlin and Johnston went back-to-back to cut the deficit back to five with 10:38 to play. Bowdoin extended the lead to 13-7, but the Camels responded with another goal each from Coughlin and Johnston, but that was as close as Conn got, falling 13-9.

Bowdoin outshot Conn 25-17, while holding a 20-4 edge on draw controls.

Ava Virga (Watertown, N.Y.) got the start in net, finishing with nine saves. Coughlin and Johnston led the way with four points each, on four goals and three goals and one assist respectively. Gill added three assists, Evans and Gershon chipped in one goal, with Hannah Prescott (North Attleboro, Mass.) notching one assist. 

Defensively, Conn scooped up 12 ground balls, led by two each from Brogan Holbrough (Rochester, N.Y.) and Talia Metz-Topodas (Berwyn, Pa.). The Camels also forced nine turnovers, with Kate Sullivan (Westwood, Mass.) causing a team-high two.

Hannah Rubin got the start in goal, making three saves in the first half, before Alexa Genua closed out the game making two saves. Miya Imaeda led Bowdoin with four points, while seven other Polar Bears tallied at least one point.

Conn (2-9, 0-8 NESCAC) wraps up the season on Wednesday, as the Camels host No. 3 Wesleyan at 6:00 p.m. on Silfen Field.
