Volleyball Falls 3-0 to No. 2 Colby

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to No. 2 Colby College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC clash at Luce Field House.

The Mules won by set scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-21 to remain unbeaten on the season, improving to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in league play. Kendall Glover led Colby with 10 kills and five blocks while Brianna Hazak added nine kills and five blocks.

Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) posted a match-high 11 kills and added three blocks to pace the Camels. Aubrie Letourneau (Mattapoisett, Mass.) handed out 15 assists while Dylan Kokkinos (Aurora, Ill.) contributed nine digs.

Colby took the opening set behind a balanced offensive effort as six players supplied multiple kills. Hazak and Hayley Beigh led the way with four apiece as the Mules went up 1-0 in the match.

The visitors used an 8-1 run in the second set to vault out to a 10-3 lead. The Mules eventually bumped the margin to double digits on a kill by Hazak that made it 20-10, and minutes later she added another kill to wrap up the set.

Kokkinos served the Camels out to a 4-0 lead to start the third, but Colby quickly recovered and evened the score at 5-5. Later, a 5-0 spurt put the Mules up 16-9, and they led 20-14 before Conn made one final push. Wartelle had a pair of kills during a 5-1 stretch that helped shrink the deficit to 21-19, but Colby held on down the stretch to secure the win.

Conn (2-6 overall, 0-2 NESCAC) will next play at Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, September 23 at 6:00 p.m.
