Volleyball Rallies Past Eastern in Five

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Connecticut College volleyball team overcame a 2-1 deficit to post a 3-2 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday evening in non-conference action at Geissler Gym.

The Camels, who improved to 2-2 in five-set matches this season, won by set scores of 25-12, 17-25, 18-25, 25-22 and 15-8. Keira Deeney (Norwell, Mass.) led the way with a season-high 14 kills and five blocks while Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) added 13 kills and seven blocks. Aubrie Letourneau (Mattapoisett, Mass.) contributed a season-high 31 assists while Dylan Kokkinos (Aurora, Ill.) led all players with 19 digs.

The Camels never trailed in the opening set after claiming the first four points of the match. Later, the visitors ripped off a 10-2 stretch that pushed the lead into double digits. Tilde Keatley (Pasadena, Calif.) and Vibha Sheth (Austin, Texas) paved the way with four kills apiece as Conn grabbed a 1-0 lead in the match.

Eastern used a 10-0 run to bounce back and take the second set, and in the third the hosts raced out to a 13-7 advantage to seize control. Emma Robinson supplied five kills in the frame as the Warriors pulled in front 2-1.

Conn fell behind 11-3 in the fourth before righting the ship. The Camels used a 9-1 spurt to nab a 22-20 lead and held on to the finish. Sheth provided two kills and a block during the stretch, and swings by Keatley and Wartelle sewed up the set and evened the match at 2-2.

After the Camels built an 8-3 advantage in the fifth, the Warriors closed the gap to 11-8 to keep things interesting. Conn ended the match with four straight points—including two kills from Wartelle and another by Deeney—to knock off Eastern for the fourth-straight year.

Keatley and Sheth finished with 11 kills each, giving the Camels four players with double-digit kills in the same match for the first time this season. Natalie Huang (Waban, Mass.) chipped in 18 digs and three service aces, and Letourneau recorded a double-double with 12 digs to go with the 31 assists.

Conn (3-6 overall) will next host Trinity College on Friday, September 25 at 6:00 p.m.
