WATERVILLE, Maine – The Connecticut College women's soccer team closed out the weekend road trip, falling short to No. 21 Colby 2-1 on Sunday from Mark Serdjenian Field.
Colby opened the contest on the front foot, recording the first shot of the contest just 3:24 in, but Grace Missett put her effort wide left. The Mules did strike first however, as Avery Barton snuck a shot in at the near post to make it 1-0 at 9:56.
Colby continued to put pressure on Conn, putting three shots on target over the next 15 minutes, but Maia Kafer (Philadelphia, Pa.) answered by stopping all three efforts. Conn responded with their first shot on target in the 35th minute, but Danica Zicha (Belmont, Mass.) was denied by Sadie Gardner to send the Mules into the break in front 1-0.
Conn came out in the second half with more energy looking to even the score and earned two corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes. The Camels were unable to capitalize, but found the equalizer at 58:30.
Blessing Kieh (Monrovia, Liberia) worked down the near sideline before firing a low-driven cross into the box that deflected off a Mules defender and into the goal, to even the score at one. Conn nearly took the lead just over 30 seconds later, as Morgan Lovell (Franklin, Mass.) fired a shot that went just wide of the left post.
Colby however, retook the lead five minutes later. Ella Caraluzzie fired a shot towards the far post that snuck in to make it 2-1 in the 65th minute. The Camels upped the pressure looking for another equalizer, and nearly got it with six minutes remaining, but Kieh dragged her shot wide right, as Conn fell short 2-1.
Colby outshot Conn 21-5 overall, including 9-1 on shots on target, while holding a 7-3 edge on corner kicks.
Kafer got the start in goal, recording seven saves. Kieh generated the lone goal for Conn, while Claire Chace (Bristol, R.I.) led the way with two shots.
Gardner picked up the win in net, finishing with one save. Barton and Caraluzzi led the way for Colby, with both tallying one goal.
Conn (2-2-1, 1-2-1 NESCAC) returns home on Wednesday night as the Camels host Coast Guard in the annual Whale Cup game at 7:00 p.m. on Silfen Field.
