NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team scored three times in the opening 16 minutes en route to a 4-0 win over visiting Salve Regina on Monday night from Silfen Field.
Conn came out the gates firing, opening the scoring just 5:41 into the contest. Lucy Hurlbut (Westport, Conn.) took a pass from Emma Ward (East Setauket, N.Y.) down the far sideline, before Hurlbut cut in on her right foot and fired a shot into the far corner to make it 1-0.
Salve responded with their first shot on goal at 9:44, but Maia Kafer (Philadelphia, Pa.) made the save. The Camels came straight back down the field, as Hurlbut connected with Zola Alcora (Norwell, Mass.) fired high in the cage to make it 2-0 just 10:18 into the contest.
Conn continued to put pressure on the Seahawks, as Una McCorry (Bronxville, N.Y.) fired a long range effort that snuck under the crossbar to make it 3-0 at 15:49. With just under five minutes remaining in the half, Myla Berrien (Trumbull, Conn.) lofted a ball into the box that Blessing Kieh (Monrovia, Liberia) beat the Salve goalie to, chipping over the keeper and in, to send the Camels into the break in front 4-0.
Conn controlled play in the second half, and nearly pushed the lead to five, with just under 15 minutes remaining, but Hailey Stern's (Millwood, N.Y.) effort from the edge of the box struck the crossbar. The Camels closed out the final minutes to come away with the strong 4-0 victory.
Conn outshot Salve 19-9, including 9-3 on shots on target, while both squads earned four corners.
Kafer picked up the win in net, finishing with two saves in 70 minutes of action, while Saylor Redfearn (Middletown, R.I.) closed out the game making one save. Hurlbut paced the Camels attack with three points on one goal and one assist, while Alcaro, Kieh, and McCorry all added one goal, with Berrien chipping one assist.
Emelia DaPonte got the start in goal for Salve finishing with three saves in the first half, while Sabrina Lawless played the second half making two saves.
Conn returns to action on Saturday as the Camels travel to take on Middlebury at 11:00 a.m. in Middlebury, Vt.
