Day 3 Round Up

NEW LONDON, Conn.--The UMass-Boston volleyball team earned a 3-2 (25-14, 18-25, 25-22, 12-25, 15-13) victory against Bowdoin College in the third round of the NCAA Division III Volleyball Championship hosted by Connecticut College at Luce Field House Sunday.

Head Coach Terry Condon's Beacons (20-11) will travel to Hope College in Holland, Michigan to take on Christopher Newport University (38-2) in an NCAA Quarterfinal match-up played Thursday in DeVoes Field House.  Bowdoin College, who set a program record for wins, closes out a historic season with a record of 28-5.

At the conclusion of Sunday's match the All-Tournament Team was selected. UMass-Boston senior Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, Calif.) was named the Most Valuable Player of the Regional. Thompson was joined on the All-Tournament team by classmate Kayla Wilson (San Jose, Calif.). Senior Tory Edelman (New York, N.Y.) and junior setter Sophia Cornew (Portola Valley, Calif.) represented the Bowdoin College Polar Bears on the squad. Connecticut College senior setter Katie Ketcham (San Francisco, Calif.), Springfield College junior Tessa Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) and MIT rookie middle hitter Ada Taylor (Durham, N.C.) were all honored on the All-Tournament Team.

"That was a tough match, very tough match," Coach Condon said. "We both played well and I think momentum carried the match. Each one of us had momentum at certain times. Luckily we had it at the end of the fifth set."

Thompson exploded with 16 kills, 16 digs and seven blocks for the winning side. Senior libero Kayla Wilson posted 24 digs and is confident in her team's ability to succeed in the round of eight.

"We've accomplished so much throughout this whole year," Wilson said. "We've been underdogs throughout this whole season and we've been through so much and this is exactly what we needed to bring our confidence up. We're going to keep going higher and higher. We're capable of beating every team out there."

Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, Calif.) posted a double-double with 10 kills and19 digs. Emma Rocha (Boynton Beach, Fla.) doled out 25 assists to go with 16 digs. Megan Pollock (Wilton, Calif.) had 16 assists for the Beacons.

Bowdoin College head coach Karen Corey was proud of her entire team and appreciative of all her senior class had done for the program.

"I'm really proud of this team and their accomplishments this season, led by a really strong senior class," Coach Corey said. "Hillary Cederna (Cumberland, Maine) had a fantastic match against UMass-Boston today. Melissa Haskell (Medfield, Mass.) has been a consistent top performer for us four years and I could not be more proud of her contributions to the program. Tory Edelman did a great job for us making the All-Tournament team puts a cap on a great career for her."

Edelman finished with 14 kills for the Polar Bears. Ellie Brennan (Medway, Mass.) had 11 kills, four digs and four blocks. Cederna buried eight kills to go with 13 digs while Haskell contributed seven kills and 15 digs for Bowdoin. Sophia Cornew dished out 32 assists and Taylor Vail (Glendale, Calif.) registered a match-high 27 digs for the Polar Bears.

The fifth set was a back and forth battle that featured five ties. When Thompson buried a kill from the right side to make it a 13-10 contest, the Beacons appeared to be on their way. But back-to-back attacking errors and a monster kill from Brennan from the right side forced the fifth tie at 13. However, the Beacons used kills from Amber Clemons (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Thompson to close out the match with a 15-13 triumph.

Day 2 Round Up

NEW LONDON, Conn.--After two days and six matches, the stage is set for the NCAA Division III Regional Final at Connecticut College. The Bowdoin College Polar Bears will take on the Beacons of UMass-Boston for the opportunity to advance into the round of eight.

After dropping the first two sets and falling behind 20-16 in set three, the Bowdoin College volleyball team stormed back to defeat Springfield College 3-2 (21-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-7) in the second round of the NCAA Division III Volleyball regional held at Luce Field House Saturday.

With the win, Head Coach Karen Corey's Polar Bears set a program record for wins, improving their mark to 29-4. The Pride closed out their season with a record of 27-8 The Polar Bears will meet the winner of the UMass-Boston-Connecticut College match tomorrow afternoon at four with a ticket to the NCAA Elite Eight on the line.

"We totally turned it on," Coach Corey said. "We flipped the switch at the last possible second where we could win the match. I'm sure Springfield was frustrated by that. I was thrilled. We kept talking about playing together and bringing our energy to the game and cheering more and supporting each other more and we started to do that and that really made the whole difference for us. The experience we have is important because it keeps us calm. "

Senior Melissa Haskell (Medfield, Mass.) delivered much of that energy for the Polar Bears, erupting with 19 kills and 10 digs en route to a double-double.

"We knew we could win this match," Haskell said. "What we really tried to do in the third set was be consistent. We know we can hit all of our different shots. It was just us knowing that we could do it and just believing that we could do it and never thinking that was the end."

Christy Jewett (Sunnyvale, Calif.) buried 16 kills with just two errors and had five blocks, hitting .483 in the triumph.

"When we came here today we knew we were going to win," Jewett said. "We had the confidence and mentality and so the first two games were kind of a shock for us but we just got it done playing together."

Tory Edelman (New York, N.Y.) finished with 17 kills for the Polar Bears. Junior setter Sophia Cornew (Portola Valley, Calif.) had 55 assists and 20 digs.  Taylor Vail (Glendale, Calif.) finished with 20 digs while senior Hillary Cederna (Cumberland, Maine) had 18 digs.

Springfield College Head Coach Moira Long reflected on the grueling two and one half hour battle.

"I thought we did a great job sticking to the game plan set one and two," Coach Long said. "In set three, I thought our offense started to get a little bit predictable and I think that was the difference. And I think once Bowdoin got a sniff of oh wow, maybe we can win this set and climb back in, I think they just gained a lot of confidence and we didn't respond."

Tessa Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) buried 15 kills to go with 20 digs for the Pride. Kelsey McGayhey (Shelter Island, N.Y.) finished with 13 kills. Whitney Miller (Cuba, N.Y.) dished out 34 assists for Springfield. Amy Entel (Berkley, Mass.) registered 26 digs in the setback.

In the fifth and deciding set, took an early 5-3 lead. But Bowdoin clamped down and went on a 7-to-1 run to take a 10-6 edge. Springfield got one point back but Haskell put down three of the final four points with kills to seal the 15-7 win for the Polar Bears.

In the second match-up, the Beacons of UMass-Boston rallied from a 2-1 deficit to hold off Connecticut College in a 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 20-25, 25-18, 18-16) win.

UMass-Boston improves its record to 19-11 with the triumph. The Camels fall to 25-4 as their historic season comes to an end.

"Conn. played very well and got us out of our system," UMass-Boston Head Coach Terry Condon said.  "But we hung in there. The crowd had a lot of effect on us tonight, especially on our young freshman."

Senior Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, Calif.) had 24 kills to lead the Beacons. Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had eight kills and 14 digs. Kayla Wilson (San Jose, Calif.) tallied 23 digs to lead the defensive efforts for the winning side.

Emma Rocha (Boynton Beach, Fla.) dished out 34 assists for UMass-Boston. Megan Pollock (Wilton, Calif.) finished with 18 assists.

Connecticut College Head Coach Josh Edmed was proud of his team's effort against a talented UMass-Boston squad.

"They should be very proud of what they've put together and accomplished the entire year," Edmed said. "I wouldn't let a series of three or four points dictate how they feel about the season. We should be proud of what we've accomplished."

Caroline Martin (Palo Alto, Calif.) buried 23 kills to go with 12 digs en route to a double-double.  Anelise Hohl (Atherton, Calif.) and Andrea Mullaney (New Canaan, Conn.) had 12 kills each. Rachel Schroff (Palos Verdes, Calif.) registered a double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs.

After recording her 2000th assist Friday, Katie Ketcham (San Francisco, Calif.) doled out 50 assist in the match and was proud of everything her team had done all year long.

"It's disappointing to not progress farther," Ketcham said. "But it was amazing to make the tournament, to make it past the first round and to host. UMass Boston is a great team. They played well."

Tomorrow's regional final will be played at 4:00 p.m. in Luce Field House Tickets are five dollars for adults and three dollars for students with a valid identification.

Day 1 Round Up

NEW LONDON, Conn.—Bowdoin College, Springfield College, UMass-Boston and Connecticut College have all won their first round match-ups at the NCAA Division III Volleyball regional at Connecticut College Friday.

The Bowdoin College volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-20) victory against  Emerson College in the first round of the NCAA Division III Championship played at Luce Field House Friday.

The Polar Bears (27-4) move on and will face Springfield College (27-7) in a regional semifinal Saturday at 3:30 p.m. Emerson closes out a memorable 2012 campaign with a record of 19-11.

Head Coach Karen Corey's Polar Bears matched a program record with their 27th win Friday and they are looking forward to the rest of the weekend's action in the Whaling City.

"Sophia (Cornew) did a good job of moving around the ball so we did not have a predictable offense," Coach Corey said. "Emerson played fantastic defense so it was important to use different tactics to get different shots. When we play together and we're energetic and excited about playing together, it is great, fun volleyball to watch. We did not quite have that match today, but we'll bring it tomorrow."

The Lions kept things close and were bolstered by junior libero Jamie Morgan's (Maple Glen, Pa.) athleticism and acrobatics in an 18 dig effort.

"I think that we all went to the right spots that coach told us to go to," Morgan said. "We just worked hard and that's all you can ask of anyone at the end of the day. We tried to read as best we could because we knew we were going up against really big hitters. Coming to NCAAs is huge for us. Not a lot of our teams go. This is the second year for volleyball which is awesome."

Christy Jewett (Sunnyvale, Calif.) had 10 kills, four digs, three blocks and three aces for Bowdoin. Ellie Brennan (Medway, Mass.) chipped in with nine kills and 12 digs.  Sophia Cornew (Portola Valley, Calif.) had 31 assists and 10 digs in the blanking.

Senior Melissa Haskell (Medfield, Mass.) buried six kills to go with seven digs and was pleased with the team's effort and program milestone for tying a record for wins.

"Each year, we've had really talented girls coming in each class and knowing that, we've set higher goals for ourselves," Haskell said. "I'm just looking forward to playing some great volleyball and meshing with my teammates and having some great games playing together this weekend."

Emerson College junior Alyssa Thorne (Pittsburgh, Pa.) buried a match-high 13 kills for the Lions. Alex Lynn (Willington, Fla.) had six kills and seven digs. Juliana Tucker (Encino, Calif.) dished out 25 assists to go with 11 digs in the match.

Emerson College Head Coach Ben Read was pleased with his team's effort in keeping it close with a larger, stronger Bowdoin squad. "There a lot of big hitters on that side and they are a great all around team. But I couldn't be prouder of the season we've had we're really looking forward to next year."

The Springfield College Pride secured a 3-0 (28-26, 25-22, 25-21) victory against Roger Williams University.

The Pride improve their record to 27-7 with the victory and will meet Bowdoin College in a battle of 27 win teams at Luce Field House Saturday at 3:30 p.m..

The RWU Hawks had their four match-winning streak snapped and close out the 2012 campaign with a record of 21-11.

"I thought we showed a lot of mental toughness," Springfield College Head Coach Moira Long said. "We were down in the second set 17-12. Just called a time out and was like listen we need to a better job of just kind of dictating point, taking good solid swings, being smarter, getting back to the game plan. All in all I thought we did a great job and stuck to the game plan. Roger Williams is a tough team and they played real well."

Tessa Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) posted 13 kills and 14 digs en route to a double-double for the winning side. Rookie outside hitter Daniella Crismani (San Francisco, Calif.) had a double-double of her own with 10 kills and 10 digs.

Miller appreciated the effort of Melissa McLaughlin (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) and Kelsey McGayhey (5 kills, 2 digs) (Shelter Island, N.Y.), who played key roles off of the Pride bench.

"Melissa pulled the blockers so that gave other hitters the opportunity to put a ball down," Miller said. "Kelsey's energy was great, it was what we needed and a lot of the time what we do is feed off each other so it was great."

Roger Williams University senior outside hitter Kelsey Twarog (Barkhamsted, Conn.) buried 10 kills to go with 12 digs in the final match of her career.

"It has been a great season for us," Twarog said. "We really worked hard and started to come together and I wish the team a lot of luck next year. Our program has really grown. To be here four times in a row is a real honor for all of us seniors."

Andrea Gorman (Wilbraham, Mass.) finished with 10 kills and five digs for Head Coach Ben Somera's Hawks.

"It was a good match for us," UMass-Boston Head Coach Terry Condon said. "It's probably the best match we played in a month in a half.  They played well. We live and breathe with our passing and running our combos. That's how we win.  We're not a big team so we have to run quick in the middle and run our combos in order to win matches. We did that tonight against them."

Shannon Thompson (Moorpark, Calif.) buried 18 kills and added 14 digs en route to a double-double, finishing with a .533 hitting percentage in the triumph and was pleased with the team's effort in the national spotlight.

Amber Clemons (Simi Valley, Calif.) chipped in with 10 kills while sophomore Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, Mass.) had nine kills and six digs.

Corrine Porter (Huntington Beach, Calif.) tallied 19 digs and Kayla Wilson (San Jose, Calif.) finished with 16 digs for the Beacons.

"I believe a huge impact was our return," Wilson said. "Our freshman stepped up big time when we needed them."

MIT middle hitter Ada Taylor (Durham, N.C.) rifled home 13 kills in the setback. Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, Mass.) finished with nine kills and three digs. Senior setter Alyssa Rothman (Plainview, N.Y.) posted a double-double with 32 assists and 10 digs for the Engineers.

In the final match of the day, the host Camels of Connecticut College improved their record to 25-3 with a 3-0 blanking of Framingham State University.

"I thought Framingham State fought hard," Connecticut College Head Coach Josh Edmed said. "They are very well coached...We've had tremendous support over the last few years from our College to allow our teams to be in this opportunity so I am glad we were able to capitalize. It is nice for the College."

"Our season went really well," Fernandes said. "We came a long way. Everyone just worked together. I feel like everyone put a lot into this. We worked our butts off. We definitely want to be here next year. This is the first time we ever won a conference championship. Now, we know saw what it's like and we know what to prepare for."
