Connecticut College 3, Trinity College 1 Martin Buries 700th Kill-Camels Notch Fifth Straight Win

NEW LONDON, Conn.--The Connecticut College volleyball team posted a 3-1 victory against Trinity College in a NESCAC match played at Luce Field House Friday.

With their fifth consecutive win, the surging Camels improved their record to 8-7 with a 3-2 mark in NESCAC play, while the Bantams fell to 11-5 with a 3-3 record in conference action.

The set scores were 25-20, 25-16, 22-25 and 25-12 in favor of the hosts.

Sam Hunter (Palos Verdes, Calif.) erupted with 14 kills, 10 digs, a pair of blocks and one ace to lead the Camels in the victory.  Alex McDevitt (Medfield, Mass.) chipped in with 10 kills, three digs and three blocks for the winning side.  Andy Mullaney (New Canaan, Conn.) buried eight kills to go with two aces, two digs and two blocks for the hosts.

Junior outside hitter Caroline Martin (Palo Alto, Calif.) recorded her 700th kill in the match, finishing with six kills and 17 digs in the victory.  Caroline Branigan (Pacific Palisades, Calif.) registered 16 digs in a start for Head Coach Josh Edmed's squad.

Sophomore setter Emily Arterbury (Austin, Texas) dished out 28 assists while adding three digs, two aces and two blocks.

Trinity College junior middle hitter Kate Giddens (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) had 13 kills, 10 digs, four blocks and three aces to lead the Bantams in the setback.  Hunter Drews (Clifton Park, N.Y.) fired home eight kills to go with three digs and one block.

Kristen Cooprider (Hopkinton, Mass.) finished with nine digs and a pair of aces for Trinity.

Gina Buzzelli (Cheshire, Conn.) doled out 11 assists while adding seven digs and block. Sophomore Randi Whitham (South Weymouth, Mass.) dished out seven helpers in the loss.

Hunter helped the Camels close out set one when she rifled home the game-winning kill that vaulted the Camels out to a 1-0 advantage.

The Camels opened things up in the second set. Hunter scored the 17th point with a block in the middle. Martin made it an 18-11 game when she rifled home a kill from the left. Ella Johnson (Seal Beach, Calif.) capped the rally with a kill to make it 21-11 and the Camels continued to pull away for the 25-16 triumph.

Trinity bounced back to take set three in a close 25-22 decision. The Bantams fell behind 22-8 in the fourth and deciding set. But Barbara Massa (Old Lyme, Conn.) closed the lead to 22-10 with a nice kill in her return to New London County.

But the visitors could not climb back into the match and the Camels were able to hold on for the comfortable 25-12 triumph to secure the NESCAC win.
