Connecticut College 3, Eastern Connecticut State U. 1 Johnson Buries Nine Kills as Camels Earn Eighth Straight Win

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. --  The Connecticut College women's volleyball team spotted Eastern Connecticut State University the first set before bouncing back for a four-set victory over the Warriors Tuesday night at Francis E. Geissler Gymnasium. It was the eighth straight victory for the Camels, who won by scores of 20-25, 25-21, 27-25 and 25-16.

With the match tied 1-1, Eastern (11-13) held slim advantages throughout most of the important third set – including a 20-16 lead -- before Connecticut College (14-5) scored the final three points on three Eastern errors. The Warriors held set point on a kill by junior right side Kay Mullen (Fairhaven, Mass.), but the Camels survived an Eastern serve to tie the set at 25-all.

Eastern trailed by three in the final set but pulled even at 13-all before the Camels took control. The Warriors never trailed after assuming an early 9-8 lead in the first set, but Connecticut College tied the match with a four-point win in the second set. Eastern led early (4-1) but the Camels scored four straight and later added another four-point run to move out to a 19-17 lead.

Connecticut College sophomore Sam Hunter (Palos Verdes, Calif.) led the Camels with 18 kills  and a .538 attack percentage, freshman Jenny Kellogg (Los Altos, Calif.) added 13 kills with a .333 attack percentage, and junior Ella Johnson (Seal Beach, Calif.) chipped in with nine kills and a .444 attack percentage.  Sophomore setter Katia Elisman (Lake Forest, Ill.) set 48 assists, Hunter had ten digs and three block assists while Kellogg handled 13 receptions without an error.

Eastern Connecticut State University juniors Ashley Adams (Mystic, Conn.) and Adrianna Mihalek (Woodbury, Conn.) each had ten kills for the Warriors and sophomore Megan Macomber (South Windsor, Conn.) added eight. Sophomore Caryn Sibiskie (Rockfall, Conn.) served for three aces in limited time before leaving with an injury, junior setter Fabiana Della-Monica (Newark, Del.) setting 22 assists and sophomore Amanda Tourjee (Waterford, Conn.) 16. Senior libero Allie Luppi (Tewksbury, Mass.) had 16 digs and Mihalek 12. Luppi, Mihalek and junior Amanda Tyler (Longmeadow, Mass.) combined to handle 61 receptions with just one error each.

Camel Tracks-Excluding Statistics from Tonight's Match

After starting the season with a 0-4 mark in conference play, the Camels have caught fire here in mid-season, winning eight matches in a row to lock up a post-season berth in the upcoming 2015 NESCAC Championship.  Connecticut College will be making its 11th straight appearance in the NESCAC Championship next month. All the action will get underway November 6. 

Sophomore setter Katia Elisman (Lake Forest, Ill.) continues to improve as the team's quarterback and table-setter. Elisman averaged 11 assists, 2.3 digs and .60 aces in 10 sets last week.  She had 44 assists, seven digs and one block in a 3-1 win against Trinity Friday. Saturday, Elisman doled out 37 assists, adding seven digs, three blocks and a pair of aces in a 3-0 blanking of Wesleyan.

Elisman is averaging 9.41 assists per set to rank third in the NESCAC.  Senior Caroline Martin of Palo Alto, Calif. leads the team with 127 kills, 163 digs and 23 service aces. She has amassed 1,027 digs during her prolific playing career. Junior Ella Johnson of Seal Beach, Calif. has posted a team-best 33 blocks while adding 117 kills for the Camels. 

The Camels will host two matches in Luce Field House this weekend. Friday night, they will take on the Coast Guard at 7:00 p.m.

Saturday, Connecticut College takes on Johnson & Wales University for a 2:00 p.m. match up.
