BRUNSWICK, Maine - Freshmen
Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) and
Ella Davidyock (Newtown, Pa.) registered their first career goals to help lead the Connecticut College women's soccer team to a 3-1 win at Bowdoin and the program's first victory on the road over the Polar Bears since 1995 on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears began the opening half aggressively, forcing sophomore goalkeeper
Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) to pull off three early stops to keep the home team off the board. After the attack by Bowdoin's offense, the Camels began to create their own chances. Senior
Kat Norton (Hampton, Conn.) and sophomore
Jamie Scarpantonio (Glastonbury, Conn.) applied pressure with a shot on goal each, but both were impressively broken up by Bowdoin goalkeeper Penny Rocchio.
Following Norton and Scarpantonio's attempts on the net, junior
Jackie Puda (Northbridge, Mass.) stepped up to launch a ball into the box on a corner. After a strategic let from junior
Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.), Mulvihill was able to fire the ball into the top left corner, tallying her first career goal, and giving the Camels the 1-0 lead just 16 minutes into the match. Sophomore
Morgan Plouffe (Johnston, R.I,), who collected the ball off of Johnson's dummy, was credited with an assist on the play for finding Mulvihill.
Bowdoin did not let up offensively, but Connecticut College's defensive line was able to hold the lead going into the second half with strong efforts from sophomore
Emma Quilty (Hingham, Mass.) and senior
Maegen Dillon (San Anselmo, Calif.) among others.
In the 56th minute, Scarpantonio was able to convert on a run through the box off of a beautiful feed from senior
Sarah Moore (Harvard, Mass.) to give the Camels a more comfortable 2-0 lead.
Just four minutes later, Bowdoin seniors Julia Adelmann and Lynn Farquhar teamed up to respond and put the Polar Bears on the board. With this goal, Bowdoin ended the Connecticut College shutout streak which lasted 663:37 of play and dated back to the Amherst match on Sept. 25.
With the score at 2-1 and time running off the clock, the Camels continued to apply pressure which paid off in the 84th minute. What seemed to be a Johnson 2-on-1 situation turned into a through ball for Davidyock, who fired a clean finish past Rocchio to extend the lead back to two goals.
Both teams totaled 10 shots on goal, while Bowdoin (7-4-1, NESCAC 2-4-1) outnumbered the Camels, 7-3, on corner kicks. Hall was credited with nine saves in the victory, while Rocchio suffered the loss with seven.
Connecticut College (8-1-2, NESCAC 5-1-1) will continue NESCAC competition at Trinity on Tuesday evening at 6 p.m.
