NEW LONDON, Conn. - Junior
Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn) tallied two goals in leading the Connecticut College women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over NESCAC opponent Middlebury College on Saturday morning on Freeman Field.
After Middlebury (6-3, NESCAC 1-3) pressured the Camel defense and directed three shots on the net, Johnson dribbled through a couple of defenders and launched a shot from 35 yards out to give the Camels the lead within 15 minutes of play.
The 1-0 score carried into the second half for less than a minute until Johnson rifled a shot into the top left corner of the net to double the Camels' lead. Senior
Kat Norton was also credited with an assist on the play for feeding Johnson the ball.
The Camels' defensive line was able to hold the lead for the rest of the match, with help from senior
Marielle McEnaney (Orleans, Mass.), sophomore
Emma Quilty (Hingham, Mass), and senior
Emily Lorry (Lower Merion, Pa.).
Despite Middlebury holding a commanding advantage in shots, 20-9, and tallying all six corner kicks of the match, goalkeeper
Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) was able to stop 13 shots on goal and was credited with the win. Middlebury goalkeeper Sydney Poppinga totaled three saves on the day.
Connecticut College (4-1-1, NESCAC 3-1-1) will continue action against NESCAC competition tomorrow against Williams at 12 p.m.
