NEW LONDON, Conn. - Junior forward
Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) scored late in the match as the Connecticut College women's soccer team topped Williams, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Camels collected their first win over Williams since 2004 as well as their fourth conference win of the season.
The game was a defensive battle from the kickoff. Both teams found themselves fighting for possession throughout the entirety of the match. Despite the Ephs constant defensive pressure, the Camels were able to get off nine shot attempts in the first half while holding Williams to just four.
The Ephs used the second half to test goalkeeper
Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) and the Camels defense by creating more scoring opportunities. Williams (2-6-1, NESCAC 0-5-1) outshot the Camels 11-7 in the second period, but were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net.
The lone goal of the match came during the 81st minute from junior
Mya Johnson. The play began with a cross from freshman
Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) which found sophomore
Jamie Scarpantonio (Glastonbury, Conn.) in the box. Scarpantonio was then able to get a touch on the ball and assist Johnson for a beautiful volley and the deciding goal of the game. Mulvihill was also credited with an assist on Johnson's third marker in two days for starting the play.
Williams goalkeeper Chelsea Taylor made an impressive 11 saves on the day in the loss, while Hall stopped six shots to help pick up the victory for the Camels.
Connecticut College (5-1-1, NESCAC 4-1-1) will next host Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday at 4 p.m. on Silfen Field.
