Women’s Soccer Downs Eastern Connecticut State On Silfen Field For Third Straight Victory

By Johnny Alexandre '22

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's soccer team recorded a dominant 3-0 victory against the Eastern Connecticut State Warriors (4-5-1) on Wednesday afternoon at Silfen Field. It was the Camels' third straight win overall and sixth consecutive against the Warriors.

At about the 15-minute mark, Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) became involved in a string of scoring opportunities. First, passing across the 18-yard box to her teammate, freshman Lexi Gudaitis (Topsfield, Mass.) who shot the ball on the ground towards the left side of the net, just to be saved by the Eastern Connecticut State goalkeeper Emily Wallace.

Just moments later Johnson would step-over dribble through defenders on the left side of the field and fire a shot just wide of the net's right post. Then on the following possession, Johnson had another chance heading a high cross on target towards the center of the Eastern Connecticut State net.

The first goal of the game came in the 21st minute when senior forward Kat Norton (Hampton, Conn.) passed a ball in the air to her teammate, junior Jackie Puda (Northbridge, Mass.), who after taking a touch, volleyed the bouncing ball into the bottom left corner of the net for the 1-0 Camel lead.

In the 57th minute, freshman Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) recovered a ball from the Eastern Connecticut defender in the attacking zone and chipped it into the Warriors' 18-yard box. Her teammate, sophomore Jamie Scarpantonio (Glastonbury, Conn.), chased it down, won the battle for possession against three Warrior defenders that included their goalkeeper, and created an easy scoring opportunity which she converted on in front of their net for the 2-0 Camel lead.

In the 73rd minute, Johnson scored for the third consecutive game, finishing a misplayed corner by the Eastern Connecticut goalie point-blank in front of their net. She now has six of Connecticut College's 11 goals on the season.

Connecticut College led in shots, 24-6, shots on goal 8-2, and corners, 4-1. Sophomore goalkeeper Nici Scola (Braintree, Mass.) made two saves in a full 90 minutes of play to earn the win. Rachel Hughes, Wallace, and Tyrell collectively totaled fives while splitting time for Eastern Connecticut State (4-5-1).

Connecticut College (6-1-1) will next take on the Mitchell College Mariners, tomorrow at 4:00 p.m. again on Silfen Field.
