Women’s Soccer Dominates Mitchell In 4-0 Victory

By Zach Perbeck

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's soccer team won in dominant fashion over the Mitchell Mariners on Thursday evening by a score of 4-0 at Silfen Field. It marked the fifth consecutive shutout for the Camels this season.

Connecticut College opened the scoring in the 13th minute as junior Mary Parse (Orange, Mass.) found the back of the net for her first score of the season. The Camels controlled possession for most of the first half and junior leading scorer Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) added to the lead in the 22nd minute on a penalty kick that found its way past Mitchell goalkeeper Gemma Landry.

The Camels continued to control the pace of play and limit the chances for their opponents throughout the remainder of the first half as the Mariners did not register a shot throughout the first 45 minutes. Right before halftime, senior Sarah Moore (Harvard, Mass.) put the Camels up by three as she scored her first goal of the season, assisted by Parse. The Camels dominated possession throughout the entire first half and took their 3-0 lead into halftime along with a 13-0 lead in the shots category.

The second half was much of the same, with the Camels limiting the chances of their opponent while maintaining control of the ball and the tempo. The scoring in the second half was much quieter, with Landry making three impressive saves for the Mariners, until the 85th minute when Connecticut College sophomore Rylie Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) took a rebound and got the ball past the Mitchell goalkeeper to bring the score to 4-0. Classmate Lauren Anastos (Hull, Mass.), who took the initial shot which was saved from point blank range, was credited with an assist on the play.

Freshman Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) earned the win in her first collegiate start at goalkeeper for the Camels despite not having any save opportunities. Landry took the loss for Mitchell (3-6-1) while making eight saves. The Camels led the Mariners in both shots (27-0) and corner kicks (5-0) by substantial margins.

Connecticut College (7-1-1) will begin a four-game road trip by traveling to Providence, R.I. to take on Johnson & Wales on Monday, October 11th, at 7:00 p.m.
