NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team kicked off its season with a 2-1 road win under the lights against neighboring Coast Guard on Wednesday evening.
The Camels got off to a great start through junior forward
Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, C.T.), who opened her personal and the team's account for the season just nine minutes into the game. Johnson picked up where she left off her freshman year when she led the team in points, scoring her ninth career goal on an assist from senior captain
Kat Norton (Hampton, Conn.)
Norton then doubled the Camels' lead, turning from provider to goal scorer at the 60-minute mark. Assisted by junior
Hannah Boldt (North Kingstown, R.I.), the second tally of the game proved to decide the contest.
With just under ten minutes left, the Bears got back into the game with a goal from Riley Vicinanzo. However, the late rally fell short as the Camels held on to win.
The dominant performance included 27 shots and 6 corner kicks, outdoing the Bears in every offensive statistic. Comparatively, Coast Guard (2-3) could only muster seven shots with two on goal and three corner kicks.
Sophomore Camel goalkeeper
Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) earned the win, registering one save in her competitive debut for the Camels. On the flip side, Bears netminder Hope Drake-Duval allowed two goals while making six saves throughout the game. With the loss, Coast Guard fell to 2-3, while the Camels start their season on a positive note with a win.
Connecticut College (1-0) will next travel to Lewiston, Maine on Saturday to face off against the Bates Bobcats at 11:00 a.m.
