Women’s Soccer Downs Bates, 1-0, In NESCAC Opener

LEWISTON, Maine - Junior forward Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) scored early in the match off a deflection as the Connecticut College women's soccer team topped Bates 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Russell Street Field. With the victory, the Camels opened NESCAC play with a win and Johnson tallied her second goal of the young season. 
 
Johnson started the scoring early for Connecticut College with a goal in the fifth minute off a deflection on an attempted clearance by Bates goalkeeper Kat Nuckols. The Camels continued to pressure Bates throughout the first half of play, leading in shots by a tally of 14-4. Bates had a chance to even the match right before halftime, but Rachael Mello missed wide on a penalty kick in the 45th minute, and Connecticut College took the 1-0 lead into the break.
 
The Camels maintained control of possession throughout the second half as they led their opponents in shots by a margin of 9-6. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) totaled four saves in the second half as Bates was unable to find the back of the net. On the offensive side, Johnson continued to apply pressure as she finished the match with seven shots, three of which were on goal.
 
Hall earned her first shutout win of her career by turning away five shots for Connecticut College, who outshot its opponent by a 23-10 margin. The Camels led their opponents in corner kicks as well by a tally of 6-0. Nuckols suffered the loss for Bates (1-2-1, NESCAC 0-2) while recording six saves.
 
Connecticut College (2-0, NESCAC 1-0) will return home tomorrow to host Colby at 1:30 p.m.
