Women’s Soccer Defeats Colby, 2-0, For Second Straight NESCAC Victory

By Jenna Whelan '22

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Kat Norton (Hampton, Conn.) and junior Claire Williams (Portsmouth, R.I.) each scored a goal as the Connecticut College women's soccer team continued its winning streak by defeating Colby College, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon at Freeman Field.

Connecticut College wasted no time and tallied its first goal of the day before two minutes ticked off the clock. Junior Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn) dropped off a pass for Norton at the top of the box, and the senior captain buried the ball in the top right corner to give the Camels the early lead.

Despite an aggressive effort, Colby (1-1-1, NESCAC 0-1-1) was unable to get the ball past Conn's defensive line, which held the Mules to only two shots in the first half, neither of which were on target. Seniors Emily Lorry (Lower Merion, Pa.) and Marielle McEnaney (Orleans, Mass.) led the defense with help from sophomore Emma Quilty (Hingham, Mass).

The Camels extended their lead in the 64th minute during the second half after McEnaney set up a perfect pass into the box from the endline, giving Williams the opportunity to tap the ball into the back of the net. Later, Colby midfielder Corrigan Rayhill gave her team a chance to catch up, but goalkeeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) scooped up the shot to secure the win.

Conn led in total shots, 18-5, and edged out the Mules in corner kicks, 7-3. Despite suffering the loss, Colby goalkeeper Emily McMaster recorded 12 saves during her 90 minutes of play, while Hall was credited with the win and tallied one save.

Connecticut College (3-0, NESCAC 2-0) will travel to Massachusetts tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. for a non-conference matchup against UMass Dartmouth. It will be the team's third match in as many days.
