Women’s Soccer Dealt Its First Loss Of The Season By No. 18 Amherst

By Zach Perbeck

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the 2021 season in 4-0 fashion to No. 18-ranked NESCAC foe Amherst at home on Saturday afternoon.

Connecticut College senior captain Emily Lorry (Lower Merion, Penn.) hit the crossbar in the third minute, and that would be the closest that the Camels came to finding the back of the net. Amherst's Natalie Landau opened the scoring in the 20th minute and followed up with a second goal just four minutes later past sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) to give the Mammoths a quick 2-0 lead. Connecticut College looked to be holding off the Amherst attack for the rest of the half until Carter Hollingsworth scored in the 44th minute, putting her team up 3-0 at the break.

The second half was a much different story, with the Camels leading in shots by a 14-10 margin and junior Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) continuing to lead the offensive pressure with five shots in the game, three of which were on goal. Despite the change of control, each time the Camels looked to have an opening, the play was shut down by a save from Amherst goalie Mika Fisher.

After Connecticut College switched out Hall for sophomore goalkeeper Nici Scola (Braintree, Mass.), the Mammoths found an opening on a breakaway that led to a Patience Kum goal in the 67th minute, putting them up 4-0. Freshman Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) entered the game in the 74th minute from Connecticut College and compiled three saves while holding the opponents scoreless through the rest of the game.

Fisher totaled six saves to pick up the victory for Amherst (5-1, NESCAC 2-1) while Hall totaled four in the losing effort. The Mammoths led in shots, 21-20, and the Camels led in corners by an 8-6 margin.

Connecticut College (3-2, NESCAC 2-1) will next travel to Clinton, N.Y. tomorrow to take on Hamilton College at 11:00 a.m.
