Women's Soccer Shuts Down Colby 2-0

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Connecticut College women's soccer team took down Colby 2-0 on Saturday afternoon, snapping a two-game conference losing streak. Jamie Scarpantonio (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) netted goals for the Camels.

Connecticut College (7-4-1 overall, 3-3-1 NESCAC) picked up its fourth NESCAC win of the season and currently sit in eighth place in the conference standings.

The Camels were aggressive offensively early on. In the opening 15 minutes, the visitors earned five corner kicks and tallied five shots, but each attempt was unsuccessful.

It was in the 31st minute where the Camels came through on the scoreboard. Just inside the Mules' penalty area, Scarpantonio dribbled into the box and located a perfect shot that landed in the top-right corner of the goal. Colby goalkeeper MK Marshall had no chance for save and the bulls eye shot put the Camels up 1-0. The goal broke a two-game scoreless streak for the Camels

The remainder of the half was a defensive battle, as both sides could not take advantage of any offensive opportunities.

Following the halftime break, Conn was able to capitalize once again in the 64th minute. After Sarah Hobbs (Kansas City, Mo.) forced a turnover near midfield, Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) delivered a well-placed through ball to Johnson. The senior cut to the inside of the field, shaking off her defender. Following a few more dribbles, Johnson was one-on-one with the goalkeeper and easily placed the ball into the right corner of the net for the Camels' second goal.

Conn's defense was fantastic throughout the game, and with the two-score lead, only allowed two shots in the final 20 minutes.

Goalkeeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) picked up five saves in the clean sheet victory for the Camels. Marshall stopped three shots for the Mules.

Connecticut College will next travel to Amherst for a mid-week NESCAC matchup against the Mammoths on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
