Women's Soccer Qualifies For NESCAC Tournament With 1-1 Draw Against Bates

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw against Bates on Saturday afternoon at Freeman Field. The Camels earned one point for the decision, and as a result, have officially earned a spot in the NESCAC Tournament.

Coming into Saturday's matchup Conn needed a win or draw to secure a spot in the postseason.

Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) got the Camels going early on. Just 30 seconds into the game, Johnson scored off a volley from seven yards outside the penalty area to give the Camels a 1-0 lead. The goal was Johnson's team-leading sixth of the year and 27th of her Conn career.

The Bobcats buckled down for the remainder of the half, and were able to keep the Camels from extending their lead. Conn's defense was equally as staunch, only allowing two shots on goal throughout the first 45 minutes of play.

The Camels defensive prowess continued into the second half, but Bates was finally able to break through in the 74th minute. Senior Joanna Cloutier delivered a through ball to teammate Abby Alter who made a move to get by Camels' keeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) who was charging out of the net to cut off the pass. Alter evaded Hall and easily kicked home the equalizer into the empty goal.

With time winding down, Camille Cortes (Annandale, Va.) and Rylie Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) landed shots on goal for the Camels, but Bates' goalie Ruby Reimann stopped both attempts to secure the 1-1 draw.

Hall tallied seven saves for the Camels, compared to two from Reimann. Conn outshot Bates 14-12 and earned five corners throughout the game.

Prior to the contest, the Camels celebrated its five seniors. Johnson, Sophia Bodor (Grafton, Mass.), Claire WIlliams (Portsmouth, R.I.), Jackie Puda (Northbridge, Mass.), and Sophia Hartley (Johnston, R.I.) were recognized for their outstanding tenures and contributions to the women's soccer program.

Conn's five-game win streak against the Bobcats was snapped, but the Camels have not lost to Bates since 2015.

The Camels have reached the NESCAC playoffs for the fifth time in the last six years that the tournament has been held.

Connecticut College (7-5-2 overall, 3-4-2 NESCAC) will host Wesleyan at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25 in the final game of the regular season.
