Women's Soccer Draws With Wesleyan To Conclude Regular Season

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) scored on a penalty kick in the 86th minute to force a 1-1 draw against Wesleyan on Tuesday night at Silfen Field.

Connecticut College (7-5-3 overall, 3-4-3 NESCAC), who earned a berth in the NESCAC tournament last weekend, wrapped up the regular season with 12 points including Tuesday's result, and will play as the eighth seed in the postseason event.

Wesleyan (7-4-4 overall, 4-3-3 NESCAC) earned the sixth seed with 15 points.

The two teams proved to be evenly matched throughout the contest. In the first half, the Cardinals edged the Camels 7-6 in shots, but the hosts nearly got on the board early on.

Three minutes into the game, Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) was fouled on a breakaway, and Conn earned a free kick from just outside the Wesleyan penalty area. First year, Alexa Weiner (Fairfield, Conn.) took a shot that evaded the wall of Cardinals defenders. The attempt was nearly successful, but it caromed off the right goal post, and Wesleyan was able to clear the shot to keep the Camels off the scoreboard.

Following the halftime break, the Cardinals pushed the offensive attack. After earning a corner kick in the 60th minute, senior Dani Milovanov crossed it into the box and the kick found the head of teammate Grace Devanny. The 2021 NESCAC Player of the Year smashed the header home to give Wesleyan a 1-0 lead.

In the 75th minute, the Camels nearly scored the equalizer on a cross by Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt.). The first year made a perfect pass into the box for teammate Lauren Anastos (Hull, Mass.). Anastos located a header that seemed to be bound for the back of the net, but Wesleyan keeper Sarah Hammond knocked the ball away at the last moment from point blank range to keep Conn off the scoreboard.

With less than five minutes remaining, Mulvihill rocketed a shot toward Hammond from just inside the box. The keeper was able to save it initially, but as the ball trickled away from her, Conn forward Ella Davidyock (Newtown, Pa.) attempted to score on the rebound. Rushing forward, Hammond collided with the Camels sophomore resulting in a rare penalty from the keeper. The infraction set up the penalty kick for Mulvihill who tied the game at the 85:33 mark.

The last few minutes consisted of a slew of face-paced attempts to untie the score, but in the end, both teams would have to settle with the 1-1 draw.

Conn keeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) made six saves in goal. Hammond stopped five shots for Wesleyan, all in the second half. The Camels held the slight edge over the Cardinals in shot attempts and corner kicks 17-13 and 7-5 respectively.

The Camels will next travel to play top-seeded Amherst in the quarterfinals of the NESCAC tournament on Saturday, Oct. 29. Earlier in the year, the Mammoths topped Conn 3-1 thanks to a pair of goals late in the second half.
