Women's Soccer Falls To Williams 1-0

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - The Connecticut College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Williams on Saturday afternoon at Cole Field.

The Ephs (7-2-1 overall, 6-1 NESCAC) scored the game's only goal in the 17th minute when a corner kick from Jaquelin Nordhoff grazed off the fingertips of Camels' goalkeeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.). The deflected ball took a fortunate trajectory for Williams, as Ava Simunovic was able to finish the score with a header in the middle of the penalty box.

The contest was a story of two halves for the NESCAC rivals. Throughout the first 45 minutes, the Ephs pushed the tempo and controlled possession. The hosts earned six corner kicks and put six shots on goal in the opening period.

In the 8th minute, Simunovic fired an open shot inside the penalty box towards the top right corner of the goal. Hall was able to outstretch her arms and deflect the ball out of bounds, resulting in an excellent save for the keeper.

Overall, Hall tallied five first half saves to hold the Williams lead to only one goal.

The Camels came out firing early in the second half. Within the first three minutes, Conn had a series of potential scoring opportunities. First, Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) took a shot from  outside the penalty box that was saved by Ephs keeper Margaret Huelin. On the ensuing corner kick, Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) had a header attempt that drifted just wide of the net. Then, Ella Davidyock (Newtown, Pa.) took a long shot, on the mark from outside the box. Huelin was able to catch the attempt to keep the Camels off the scoreboard.

Mulvihill and Davidyock threatened to score a few possessions later. Both scoring tries were on target, but resulted in easy saves for Huelin.

Despite the aggressive offensive approach, the Camels could not find the equalizer. In the 73rd minute, Mulvihill had one last chance, but her attempt sailed high and over the crossbar.

The victory was the sixth conference win for Williams, who currently sit atop the NESCAC standings.

Hall played well for the Camels, recording seven saves. Huelin stopped six shots for the Ephs. Williams had the slight edge in total shots, 14-11.

Connecticut College (6-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 NESCAC) will next be in action on Sunday, Oct. 9 at Middlebury.
