Middlebury Tops Women's Soccer 1-0

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Connecticut College women's soccer team dropped a conference matchup to Middlebury on Sunday afternoon. The Camels fell to the Panthers 1-0 at Dragone Field on a penalty kick in the ninth minute by Emma Binks.

With the victory, Middlebury (9-3-0 overall, 4-3-0 NESCAC) remains unbeaten on its home pitch and have now won four out of its last five matchups against Conn.

The Panthers pushed the offensive tempo to begin the game and kept the Camels back line and goalkeeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) busy early.

At the 8:05 mark, Camels' midfielder Morgan Plouffe (Johnston, R.I.) took down a Middlebury attacker in the box resulting in a penalty kick. Binks took the attempt and drilled it into the bottom right corner of the net, past the diving Hall, to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead.

For the rest of the half, Middlebury remained aggressive, tallying 15 total shots. But Hall and the Conn defense held strong and kept the Panthers' lead to one-goal heading into halftime.

Middlebury faced heavy adversity early on in the second half. Just under four minutes into the period, Panthers' midfielder Kiley Bertos took down a Camels player and earned a red card for the hard tackle. As a result, Middlebury had to continue with only 10 players on the field for the remainder of the game.

The Panthers had to shift their offensive-minded approach to a defensive formation, allowing for several scoring opportunities for the Camels.

For the remaining 40 minutes, Conn controlled possession and was able to land five shots on goal. But Middlebury keeper Sydney Poppinga kept the Camels off the scoreboard. The Panthers consistently loaded defenders into the penalty box, and the strategy paid off, for Conn could not get the equalizer as time ran out in the second half.

Hall finished the contest with nine saves, while Poppinga stopped six shots for the Panthers. Middlebury tallied 20 total shots, compared to 12 for the Camels.

Connecticut College (6-4-1 overall, 2-3-1 NESCAC) will continue their road stretch with a conference matchup against Colby on Oct. 15 at 11:00 a.m.
