Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Defeats Coast Guard To Win Whale Cup

NEW LONDON, Conn. - For the 11th consecutive year, the Connecticut College women's soccer team defeated the United States Coast Guard Academy to earn the Whale Cup. The Camels took down the Bears 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Silfen Field in a battle of New London rival schools.

Following a loss at Tufts over the weekend, the Camels bounced back with a strong effort and wasted no time on the offensive end to begin the game.

Just 6:22 seconds in, Conn scored its first goal when senior Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) took the ball at midfield and raced down the center of the pitch just outside the penalty box. With defenders converging on both sides, Johnson dished a beautiful lead pass to teammate Jamie Scarpantonio (Glastonbury, Conn.) on the far end who buried a shot off her right foot to give the Camels a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Conn nearly scored a second goal when midfielder Ella Davidyock (Newtown, Pa.) fired a clean shot from about 10 yards out. Bears' goalkeeper Emily Scharnitzky made a diving save to thwart the attempt.

For the remainder of the half, the home team dominated possession and kept the ball in the attacking area, thanks in part to the strong play of Davidyock on both the offensive and defensive side.

Trailing 1-0 at the break, Coast Guard came out aggressively to begin the second half. After mustering only one shot through the first 45 minutes, the Bears pushed the tempo and were able to launch several attempts towards Camels' goalkeeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.). Hall and the Conn defense weathered the fast-paced offensive approach from the visitors and held the Bears off the scoreboard.

Midway through the second stanza, the Camels earned a little breathing room when a corner kick from Alexa Weiner (Fairfield, Conn.) was sent into the box. The cross caromed off several Bears' defenders and onto the foot of Lauren Anastos (Hull, Mass.), who tapped the ball in to give the Camels a two-goal lead with less than 30 minutes to go.

With the momentum fully on their side, Conn controlled the remainder of the game and limited Coast Guard to only one shot on goal for the rest of the way. The Camels were able to quiet a rowdy visiting crowd, and held on to win the Whale Cup by a final score of 2-0.

With the victory, Connecticut College (2-1-0) has won 20 of the 21 meetings over Coast Guard (3-2-0) dating back to the 2000 season.

The Camels outshot the Bears 23 to seven and earned the slight seven to six edge in corner kicks.

Hall made four saves for Conn, while Scharnitzky stopped three shots for Coast guard.

Connecticut College will be back in action on Saturday, September 17. The Camels will host Bowdoin at 11:30 a.m. on Freeman Field.
