Women's Soccer Takes Down Bowdoin To Win First NESCAC Game

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Sophomore Ella Davidyock (Newtown, Pa.) scored the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute to give the Connecticut College women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over Bowdoin on Saturday afternoon at Freeman Field.

As a result, the Camels picked up their first NESCAC win of the season, toppling the previously unbeaten Polar Bears.

Playing at Freeman Field for the first time this season, Conn wasted no time getting on the scoreboard at the beginning of the contest. Just 3:30 in, sophomore Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) forced a turnover at midfield and executed a perfect lead pass to forward Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.). Johnson raced past the Bowdoin defenders and fired a shot with her right foot that zoomed past goalkeeper Alex Arndt and into the bottom left corner of the net. The strike gave the Camels a 1-0 lead early on.

The Polar Bears had a chance to answer 14 minutes later when midfielder Morgan Smiley turned up field and into the Camels' defensive zone. Smiley made a move to get by a defender and goalkeeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.). With a look at the empty net, Smiley attempted a shot, but Conn defender Lexi Gudaitis (Topsfield, Mass.) came out of nowhere to make an outstanding tackle just in time and prevent a sure goal for the visitors.

Bowdoin continued to press the attack for the remainder of the half and the Polar Bears were finally able to come through in the 27th minute. After Hall came out of the net to save a shot from a Bowdoin attacker, the ball trickled away and onto the foot of Samaya Bernardo, who scored the easy goal to knot the game at one.

After getting outshot 10-4 in the first half, the Camels entered the latter 45 minutes of the game with a newfound aggression. Conn began to dictate the pace and force the action.

In the 64th minute, the Camels earned a corner kick, and Emma Quilty (Hingham, Mass.) delivered the cross into the box and onto the body of Davidyock who forced it into the net past a sea of defenders to break the tie.

Leading 2-1 with 25 minutes to play, the home team buckled down defensively. For the remainder of the game, the Camels only allowed one shot on net and held on for the victory and the team's third consecutive win against the Polar Bears dating back to 2018.

Hall earned the save in goal for Conn, recording nine saves. Arndt stopped three shots for Bowdoin.

Connecticut College (3-1-0, 1-1-0 NESCAC) will next host Trinity on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
