Women's Soccer And Trinity Play To Scoreless Draw

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's soccer team played Trinity to a scoreless draw on Wednesday evening at Silfen Field.

Both teams entered the contest riding win streaks. The Camels defeated Bowdoin over the weekend for their first NESCAC victory, while the Bantams came into the match unbeaten through the first five games of the season.

Throughout 90 minutes of play, the two in-state foes proved to be evenly matched. In the first half, the majority of the action took place in the middle of the field with each side failing to gain the upper-hand offensively. Despite earning three corner kicks, the Camels did not register a single shot on goal throughout the period. Similarly, the Bantams also struggled on the offensive end, logging two shots against Conn keeper Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.).

Early in the second half, the Camels came out aggressively. In the opening minutes following the break, Ella Gazo (Colchester, Conn.) and Kristyn Moran (Hingham, Mass.) were able to each get a shot on net, but both attempts were saved by Trinity keeper Mariana Cournoyer.

Trinity (3-0-3, 1-0-2 NESCAC) threatened to break the scoreless tie in the 51st minute on a free kick attempt. Just outside the 18-yard penalty box, Hannah Storuzuk fired a line drive shot around the wall of Conn defenders. Hall was able to stop the strike on a fine diving effort to her right side and keep the Bantams off the scoreboard.

With time winding down in the contest, the Camels earned a scoring chance of their own. In the 88th minute, a free kick cross from Alexa Weiner (Fairfield, Conn.) was located perfectly into the box. Sophomore Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) rose above the Trinity defenders and landed a header toward the right goal post. Cournoyer dove to save the game-winning attempt and preserve the draw.

In total, Hall made four saves for the Camels, while Cournoyer stopped three shots for the Bantams. Conn edged Trinity 8-3 in corner kicks.

Connecticut College (3-1-1, 1-1-1 NESCAC) will be back in action on Friday, September 21 at home against UMass Dartmouth.
