NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team scored four goals in the first half and coasted to a 5-0 victory over UMass Dartmouth on Friday afternoon at Freeman Field.
Five players found the back of the net as Conn extended its unbeaten streak to four games. Four Camels also notched their first career goals in the contest.
Conn got on the scoreboard just 90 seconds into the match on a goal by
Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.), her team-leading third of the season. The play began at midfield with a service ball from
Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) that bounded over the UMass Dartmouth back line. Johnson chased it down just inside the 18-yard box and drilled a left-footed shot inside the left post for the early 1-0 advantage.
Later in the half, the Camels added a pair of long-range goals within a 3:34 span.
Margot Kuller (Camp Hill, Pa.) put a left-footed shot on frame from 25 yards out that just ducked under the crossbar in the 27th minute, and
Camille Cortes (Annandale, Va.) followed suit in the 30th minute with a score from close to 30 yards away.
Conn tacked on another goal in the 40th minute to lead 4-0 at intermission. The Camels played a ball into the box from the end line that a defender headed but failed to clear away. The ball ended up trickling along the goalie box, and
Indi Guckert (Santa Monica, Calif.) pounced on it for the quick finish.
The Camels dominated the half, earning a 14-2 edge in shots while also controlling possession. The Corsairs put one shot on goal, but it came from distance and was easily turned away.
The lone goal of the second half came in the 65th minute off the head of
Amanda Behre (Dover, N.H.). Guckert set up the score with a service ball from the right sideline, and Behre headed her shot over the UMass Dartmouth keeper to make it 5-0.
The Corsairs' offense came to life in the second half, producing multiple scoring chances and six total shots. However, Conn's goalkeeper trio of
Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Oregon),
Nici Scola (Braintree, Mass.) and
Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) all pitched in to record the team's fourth clean sheet of the season. Scola paced the group with six saves in 53:24 of action.
Katherine Hubbard (Haverhill, Mass.) and Madison Durkin (Cumberland, R.I.) each played a half in goal for the Corsairs (3-4-0 overall) and combined for three saves.
Conn College (4-1-1 overall) returns to action at home against Johnson & Wales University on Sunday, September 25 at 2:00 p.m.
