NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team opened the 2022 season with a 6-0 victory over the University of Saint Joseph on Tuesday night at Silfen Field.
Priscilla Ameyaw (Simsbury, Conn.) came off the bench to net a pair of goals in her collegiate debut. Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) and Jamie Scarpantonio (Glastonbury, Conn.) each added a goal and an assist in the winning effort.
The Camels got off to a hot start, scoring a pair of goals in the opening 10:42 of the contest. Claire Williams (Portsmouth, R.I.) got things started with a shot from 25 yards out that banged off the right post and in for a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Moments later, Emma Quilty (Hingham, Mass.) drilled a shot from 40 yards out that found the back-right corner of the goal for the 2-0 advantage.
In the 30th minute, Lauren Anastos (Hull, Mass.) slotted a ball through the middle of the USJ defense that sprung Johnson for an open look. Johnson slipped a left-footed shot past the keeper to extend Conn's lead. Ameyaw later capped the first-half scoring with her first collegiate goal in the 37th minute, punching in a loose ball on the right side of the goalie box.
The Camels, who led 4-0 at intermission, went right back to work in the second half. Jamie Scarpantonio (Glastonbury, Conn.) scored just 32 seconds into the stanza off a feed from Johnson, who played her into open space just inside the 18-yard box. USJ goalie Chandler Douglas (North Haven, Conn.) tried to get to the ball first, but Scarpantonio got there a split second earlier and directed a shot inside the far post.
Conn's final goal came in the 76th minute, once again courtesy of Ameyaw. The rookie midfielder took a pass from Anastos on the right side of the box and put a shot on goal. Both Douglas and a USJ defender got a piece of the shot, but not enough to keep it out of the back of the net.
The Camels limited the Blue Jays (1-2 overall) to only one shot in the contest. Douglas finished with six saves for the visitors.
Conn (1-0-0 overall) opens up NESCAC play at Tufts University on Saturday, September 10 at noon.
