Johnson's Five Points Leads Women's Soccer Past Middlebury 3-2

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team stayed hot, picking up their third straight win, taking down visiting Middlebury College 3-2 on Sunday from Freeman Field. With the win, Conn improves to 7-5-0 overall and 3-5-0 in NESCAC play, while Middlebury falls to 5-4-4 overall and 1-4-3 in conference play.

Middlebury (5-4-4, 1-4-3) got the first shot of the game, as Olivia Irwin-Pokorny hit the crossbar at 3:30. Conn (7-5-0, 3-5-0) responded with their first shot at 11:04, but Ella Gazo's (Colchester, Vt.) shot went wide. The Camels struck first at 20:35, as Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) fired to the bottom right corner to put Conn up 1-0. The lead did not last long, as just 24 seconds later, Middlebury answered on a goal by Gigi Day. With just over seven minutes left in the half, Johnson notched her second goal of the game, giving Conna 2-1 leading to the break.

Middlebury upped their pressure in the second half, looking for an equalizer, but Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore) and the Camels' back line kept the Panthers at bay. With just under 10 minutes left however, Middlebury found the tying goal on a shot from Mia Feldman. Conn responded quickly. Just 50 seconds later, Johnson laid a pass off to Jamie Scarpantonio (Glastonbury, Conn.) played a pass across goal to Lauren Anastos (Hull, Mass.) who tapped the ball home to give the Camels a 3-2 lead. Conn held off Middlebury for the final nine minutes and came away with a crucial 3-2 victory.

Middlebury outshot Conn 15-12 overall, but both teams had eight shots on target, while the Panthers held an 8-3 advantage on corner kicks.

Hall picked up the win in goal, finishing with six saves on eight shots. Johnson paced the Camels with five points on two goals and one assist, while Anastos added a goal, and Scarpantonio picked up an assist.

Carolyn Kelley got the start in the cage, making five saves on eight shots. Feldman led the Panthers with one goal and one assist, while Day added one goal.

Conn wraps up non-conference play with their final home game of the season, taking on Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. on Silfen Field.
