Women's Soccer Cruises Past Eastern Connecticut 4-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team continued their winning ways, taking down visiting Eastern Connecticut State 4-0 on Wednesday from Silfen Field. With the win Conn improves to 8-5 on the season, while Eastern falls to 4-6-2.

It was all Conn (8-5-0) in the first half, as the Camels outshot Eastern (4-6-2) 7-0 in the opening 45 minutes. Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) had the first three shots in the opening 15:33, but was unable to open the scoring. However, at 19:25, Conn got on the board as Camille Cortes (Annandale, Va.) fired low to the right, to put the Camels up 1-0. Just 40 seconds later the lead was doubled.

Maya Griffin (Madison, Wis.) played a lovely ball into the path of Cortes, who took a touch around the keeper, and fired across goal, tallying her second goal, making it 2-0. At 29:10, Conn extended the lead to 3-0, as Caroline Camp's (New London, N.H.) challenge laid the ball into the run of Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.), who calmly slotted the ball home, as the Camels led 3-0 at the break.

Conn continued the pressure early in the second half, but the Warriors got a break in the 60th minute, being awarded a penalty after a handball in the box. Ashlyn Rogers stepped up to the spot to take the kick for Eastern, but Conn keeper Nici Scola (Braintree, Mass.) read the shot the whole way, making the save. After three more shots by the Warriors, all saved by Scola, Zola Alcaro (Norwell, Mass.) collected the ball at the top of the box, and fired home to extend the lead to 4-0 at 67:17. Conn held off Eastern down the stretch, coming away with the 4-0 win.

Conn outshot Eastern 13-5 overall, including a 7-5 edge on shots on target, while holding an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Scola got the start in goal and made four saves, picking up the win in 71 minutes of action. Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) came on for 15 minutes between the sticks, facing no shots, while Riley Schlick-Trask (Bradenton, Fla.) recorded one save in four minutes. Cortes paced the Camels attack, tallying two goals on three shots. Alcaro and Johnson both notched one goal, while Camp and Griffin both added an assist.

Kaeden Dublin got the start between the sticks, making three saves on seven shots for Eastern. Offensively, five Warriors all recorded one shot, with all being on target.

Conn head back out on the road to take on Bates on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in Lewiston, ME, in a NESCAC matchup.
