MEDFORD, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Tufts University on Friday night in NESCAC action at Cousens Gym.
The Jumbos improved to 12-8 overall (5-4 NESCAC) behind set scores of 25-16, 25-10 and 25-13. Claire Castor paved the way with a match-high 12 kills while Rileigh Farragher contributed six kills and six blocks.
The Camels struggled to find their rhythm on offense as Tufts recorded 12.5 blocks on the night, the most by a Conn opponent all season.
Riley Lord (Exeter, N.H.) led the Camels with six kills and
Emma Wheeler (Meredith, N.H.) chipped in five kills and three blocks.
After a kill by Wheeler pulled Conn to within 7-6 in the opening set, Tufts responded with a 10-3 run to seize control. Castor supplied three kills during the stretch which left the Jumbos with an eight-point, and she finished with seven in the set as the hosts cruised to a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Camels couldn't recover from a slow start in the second, falling behind 9-2 before calling a timeout. The Jumbos later expanded the lead to double digits and coasted to the finish, nearly recording more blocks (6.5) than kills (8) in the set.
Tufts used a 9-1 run early in the third set to cement the victory. Castor tacked on her final four kills of the night to lead the way, finishing up with a hitting percentage of .550 on 20 swings.
Earlier in the day, the
NESCAC announced that this year's conference tournament will expand to include all 11 teams. Conn will play a first-round game on Friday, November 3 against an opponent to be determined.
Conn College (11-11 overall, 2-8 NESCAC) will host Mt. Holyoke College in its regular season finale on Thursday, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. Prior to the match the Camels will honor their four seniors in a special ceremony.
