NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team earned their first conference win of the season in stunning fashion, handing No. 7 Williams College their first loss of the season, in a 2-0 win on Freeman Field on Saturday. With the win, Conn improves to 5-5-0 overall and 1-5-0 in NESCAC play, while Williams falls to 7-1-2 overall and 4-1-1 in conference action.
Conn tallied the first shot of the game at 6:38, but Camille Cortes' (Annandale, Va.) effort went wide. Williams responded with the next two shots, but Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) kept the Ephs at bay. With just under 10 minutes to go in the opening half, Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) cut down the right wing before crossing the ball into the box, where Katelyn Hardwick (Milton, Ga.) headed home her first collegiate goal to put the Camels up 1-0. Each team had one more shot in the half, with Gazo coming inches away from doubling the lead, but her effort went just over the crossbar, as Conn led 1-0 at the break.
The Camels started the second half strong, as Mya Johnson (Old Lyme, Conn.) recorded the first two shots of the half, but both were off target. Trailing by a goal, the Ephs upped the pressure looking for an equalizer, but the Conn defense held steadfast. With under eight minutes remaining, the Camels broke through with an insurance marker. Once again, Gazo cut down the wing before crossing into the box, this time connecting with the foot of Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J) who slotted it home to put the Camels up 2-0. Williams was awarded a penalty kick in the final minute, but Jaquelin Hordhoff's effort went wide.
Conn outshot Williams 11-9 overall and 4-3 on shots on goal, while the Ephs held a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks.
Hall picked the clean sheet in goal, tallying three saves on the afternoon. Hardwick and Mulvihill both tallied a goal, while Gazo picked up an assist on both markers to pace the Camels attack, while Johnson recorded four shots, with two on target.
Margaret Huelin picked up the loss between the sticks, making two saves on four shots. Tori Huang paced the Williams offense, notching two shots with one on target.
Conn stays at home to take on Colby on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., in which the Camels will honor nine members of their program before the contest on Freeman Field.
