NEW LONDON, Conn – The Connecticut College women's soccer team brought home the Whale Cup for the 12
th consecutive season, defeating the United States Coast Guard Academy, 3-0, in the battle of New London rivals. With the win the Camels improve to 2-1-0 on the season while the Bears fall to 1-4-0.
Conn (2-1-0) started quickly as
Lauren Anastos (Hull, Mass.) fired a shot just high 34 seconds into the contest. Just three minutes later, the Camels opened the scoring as
Jamie Scarpantonio (Glastonbury, Conn.) found
Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) who converted to give Conn an early 1-0 lead. Coast Guard (1-4-0) replied with their first shot of the contest at 11:12.
Five minutes later Conn doubled the lead, as Scarpantonio tallied her second assist of the contest, this time coming off a goal from
Ella Davidyock (Newtown, Pa.) at 16:33. The Camels added a third goal at 32:19, as
Maddie Lynch (Noank, Conn.) notched an unassisted tally to send Conn to the half up 3-0.
Conn continued the pressure into the second half, as
Camille Cortes (Annandale, Va.) fired a shot that missed to the right six minutes into the last 45. With under 25 minutes to play, the Bears turned up the pressure trying to get back into the game, but
Nici Scola (Braintree, Mass.) was up to the task, making four saves in the span of 12 minutes, before
Ella Gazo's (Colchester, Vt.) late effort was turned aside.
Conn outshot the Coast Guard Academy 16-11 overall, but the teams finished the contest tied with eight shots on goal apiece. The Camels also held the advantage on corner kicks, being awarded eight, to just one for the Bears.
Sarah Hall got the start between the sticks, making two saves in 61 minutes of action, before Scola came on, making six saves in 26 minutes of work.
Ella Kahrl closed out the game in goal, compiling three minutes of action. Four Camels recorded two points, as Davidyock, Lynch, Mulvihill all recorded one goal, with Scarpantonio adding two assists.
Emily Scharnitzky got the start in goal, picking up the loss while making five saves. Anabelle Puzzullo paced the Bear attack, recording two shots, with both efforts being on target.
Conn closes out a short two-game road trip, as the Camels head north to take on Bowdoin College in a NESCAC matchup on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in Brunswick, Maine.
