NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team fell behind early to No. 10 Amherst College, but battled back to tie the game at two, before two late goals from the Mammoths gave Amherst a 4-3 win. With the loss, Conn falls to 2-3-0 overall and 0-3-0 in conference play, while Amherst improves to 5-0-1 and 2-0-1 in NESCAC action.
Amherst (5-0-1, 2-0-1) opened the scoring early, as Patience Kum snuck a shot past
Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) to put the Mammoths up 1-0 just under five minutes in. Just two and half minutes later, Amherst doubled the lead on a penalty kick goal from Abby Schwartz. Conn (2-3-0, 0-3-0) got their first shot of the game, just under 10 minutes into the half, as
Clare Mulvihill's (West Caldwell, N.J.) long range effort went wide.
The Camels settled in after conceding the two early goals, and with just over a minute remaining in the half,
Kristyn Moran (Hingham, Mass.) took a free kick that forced a great save from Mika Fisher. On the ensuing corner kick,
Ella Gazo's (Colchester, Vt.) cross connected with
Emma Quilty (Hingham, Mass.), to cut the deficit to 2-1 with 20 seconds left in the first half.
Amherst pushed early in the second half to extend the lead back to two goals, but Hall and the Camels defense kept the Mammoths at bay. Just over nine minutes into the half, Moran whipped a corner into the box that Mulvihill headed home to bring the teams even at two. The Mammoths moved back in front with just under 25 minutes to play, as Schwartz tallied her second goal of the contest.
Just seven minutes later, Amherst pushed the lead back to two goals, off a goal from Precious Novidrzo. With time running down, the Camels caught a break as the Mammoths gave up an own goal with just over minutes remaining to make it a 4-3 game. Time ran out on the Conn comeback as the Camels fell 4-3.
Amherst held the advantage on shots 24-8, including a 13-5 edge on shots on goal, while Conn held the lead on corner kicks, 3-0.
Hall got the start between the sticks, making nine saves on the evening. Mulvihill paced the Camel attack, recording three shots, while she and Gazo both recorded one goal. Quilty and Moran both added one assist.
Fisher picked up the win in goal, making three saves in 90 minutes of action. Schwartz paced the Mammoth attack, tallying two goals on five shots, with four on target, while Kum added one goal and one assist.
Conn remains at home for a non-conference matchup against John Jay College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. on Freeman Field.
