NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team bounced back after a tough loss on Tuesday, defeating visiting John Jay College 3-1 on Saturday from Silfen Field. With the win, the Camels improve to 3-3 on the year, while the Bloodhounds fall to 2-3.
Conn (3-3) started quickly, recording the first shot just 1:20 into the contest, but
Alexa Weiner's (Fairfield, Conn.) effort missed. The Camels continued the pressure, before opening the scoring at 11:31.
Mya Johnson's (Old Lyme, Conn.) shot was saved, but
Morgan Plouffe (Johnston, R.I.) reacted quickly to bury the rebound and put Conn up 1-0. John Jay (2-3) settled in after the opening goal, but the Camels continued their strong play. Neither team found the net for the remainder of the half, as Conn led 1-0.
Conn continued its domination throughout the second half, generating numerous chances. However, John Jay goalkeeper Lily Velo was doing everything in her power to keep the Bloodhounds in the game. With just over 18 minutes remaining, the Bloodhounds recorded their first shot of the concert, but
Sarah Hall (Tualatin, Ore.) made the save.
The Camels finally found an insurance marker with just under 11 minutes remaining, as
Anna Kalapatapu (Houston, Texas) took a long shot that snuck in off the underside of the crossbar, scoring her first career goal to make it 2-0. Just a minute later, after a giveaway from Velo,
Ella Gazo used some nice individual work to make it 3-0. The Bloodhounds got on the board with 7:22 left, as Nora O'Connor found Mikayla Schoch for the goal.
The Camels dominated in every aspect of the game, outshooting the Bloodhounds 31-2, including an 18-2 edge on shots on goal, with an 12-0 advantage on corner kicks.
Nici Scola (Braintree, Mass.) got the start in goal and did not face a shot in 64 minutes of action. Hall took her place and made one save in 17 minutes of work, and
Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) conceded the lone goal for the Camels. Gazo, Kalapatapu, and Plouffe all recorded a goal, while
Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) added four shots.
Velo was fantastic in goal for John Jay, making 15 saves. Schoch tallied the lone goal, while O'Connor added an assist.
Conn heads out on the road for a non-conference matchup on Sunday at Johnson and Wales in Providence R.I. at 4:30 p.m.
