Women's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Bates on Senior Day

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's soccer battled hard, before falling to a late goal from visiting Bates College 1-0 on Saturday from Freeman Field. With the loss, Conn falls to 5-7-0 and 2-5-0 in conference play, while Bates improves to 5-6-1 and 2-6-0 in NESCAC action.

Conn opened the contest with the first shot, as Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) forced a save at 7:20. Bates answered with three of the next four shots, with just one target, but Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) made the save.

Conn ended the half strong with the final six shots of the half. Mae Mastrullo (Hudson, Mass.) put a curling shot that just missed the far post, before Maya Griffin (Madison, Wis.) put two shots just over the crossbar.

The teams traded chances to start the second half, but neither side was able to put a shot on goal before Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) and Mulvihill forced saves from Ruby Reimann.

The chances continued late into the half as both teams looked for the winning goal. With just over a minute remaining, Bates earned a corner kick. On the ensuing kick, Gwyn Jamison played a ball into the box, connecting with the head of Abby Alter who beat the outstretched hand of Kahrl to give the Bobcats the 1-0 win.

Conn outshot Bates 17-12 overall and 8-4 on shots on target, while holding a 9-5 advantage on corner kicks.

Kahrl had a strong game in goal, recording three saves. Gazo paced the Camels with three shots on target, while both Hardwick and Mulvihill added two each.

Reimann got the start in goal, making eight saves, while Alter tallied the lone goal and Jamison added the assist.

Conn returns to action on Tuesday night, as the Camels host Trinity at 7:00 p.m. on Silfen Field.
