NEW LONDON, Conn. – Maya Griffin (Madison, Wis.) found the back in the 85th minute and the Connecticut College women's soccer team held on to beat visiting Bowdoin 2-1 on Saturday from Freeman Field. With the win, Conn improves to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play, while Bowdoin falls to 1-1-2 on the year and 0-1-1 in conference action.
Conn came out of the gates quickly as Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) forced an early save from Charlotte Iannone, before Katelyn Hardwick (Milton, Ga.) hit the crossbar at 8:51. Bowdoin settled in after the quick start from the Camels, but neither side was able to hit the back of the net as the game was scoreless at the break.
Seven and a half minutes into the second half, Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.) received a throw-in at the top of the box, and was taken down inside the penalty area, as the Camels were awarded a spot kick. On the ensuing penalty kick, Gazo's initial shot was stopped, but the rebound bounced straight back to her, this time finding the net, as Conn led 1-0 at 53:37.
Trailing by a goal, the Polar Bears upped their attack looking to find an equalizer. Eventually, Bowdoin struck back, with just over seven minutes to play as Stephanie Chrisitans hit the back of the net.
The tie was short lived however, as the Camels jumped back in front just under two minutes later. Sarah Hobbs (Montclair, N.J.) picked up a ball in the corner, finding Mulvihill at the top of the box; Mulvihill turned and played a quick pass to Griffin at the edge of the six-yard box, beating Iannone to the near post, and giving Conn the 2-1 lead. Bowdoin tried to respond, but time ran out as Conn came away with the 2-1 win.
Conn outshot the visitors 21-12 overall and 11-6 on target, while holding a 4-3 edge on corner kicks.
Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) got the start in goal and finished with five saves. Gazo and Griffin both recorded one goal, while Mulvihill notched the assist on the game winner.
Iannone recorded nine saves for the Polar Bears, while Christians recorded the lone goal.
Conn has a short turnaround, as the Camels return to action tomorrow afternoon, taking on Tufts at 12 p.m. in Medford, Mass.
