Women's Soccer Falls in Conference Matchup at #22 Tufts

MEDFORD, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team battled against #22 Tufts on Sunday afternoon, falling to the host Jumbos 6-1 from Bello Field. With the loss, Conn falls to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in conference play, while Tufts improves to 2-1 on the year and 2-1 in conference action.

Conn got the game started quickly, as a ball fell to Maya Griffin (Madison, Wis.) right near the penalty spot. Griffin shot low to the far post, but the shot was turned aside by Tufts goalkeeper Gigi Edwards. The hosts answered with a strong response, forcing three saves from Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.) by the 18th minute.

At 19:08, Tufts was awarded a penalty kick after a questionable handball called in the box, allowing Emily Nicholas a chance to open the scoring. Nicholas stepped up to the spot, but Kahrl answered the call, turning away the spot kick and falling on the rebound to snuff out the opportunity.

The Jumbos continued to put pressure on the Camels, and eventually found the opening goal, as a ball fell to the foot of Elsi Aries who put Tufts up at 30:50. Just over two minutes later, Tufts doubled the lead as Maren Jone made it 2-0 at 34:08. Conn shutdown the Jumbos for the rest of the half as Tufts led 2-0 at the break.

Tufts was strong throughout the second half, scoring four goals, pushing the lead to 6-0 at 79:42. However, 34 seconds later, Priscilla Ameyaw (Simsbury, Conn.) collected an errant pass, beating Edwards to get the Camels on the board.

Tufts outshot Conn 29-5, holding a 17-2 advantage on shots on targets and an 8-0 edge on corner kicks.

Kahrl got the start in goal, recording four saves in 62 minutes of action. Riley Schlick-Trask (Bradenton, Fla.) followed up with four saves in nine minutes, before Emily McBride (Alexandria, Va.) closed out the game in goal making one save. Zola Alcaro (Norwell, Mass.), Katelyn Hardwick (Milton, Ga.), Mae Mastrullo (Hudson, Mass.), Amayew, and Griffin all recorded one shot, while Ameyaw and Griffin both had their efforts on target.

Edwards recorded one save between the sticks for Tufts, while 11 different Jumbos found themselves on the scoresheet.

Conn returns to action on Saturday, as the Camels make the trip up north to take on Colby College at 11:00 a.m. in Waterville, Maine.
